Should we stop eating beef ?

What cows do is that they BURP and fart to their hearts' content. Like all ruminants, cows are constantly emitting methane -- a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide -- from both ends.

German agriculture is responsible for 133 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions, bringing it close to the level of emissions attributable to road traffic (152 million tons).

So when you add up the rest of the world : Africa an estimated 230 million cattle, while India hold's the world's largest cattle population with 283.1 million. The United States has 98 million head of cattle, while China has 130 million head. That`s an awful lot of emissions being passed out.

While scientists are pointing out the dangers of global warming politicians seem reluctant to tackle this issue. Should we take it upon ourselves and stop eating Beef ?

Interesting thought.
Why not ditch the car instead of the cow and start riding cows to work?

not only that, but after I've eaten a beef burger, I too start emitting lots of methane gas into the atmosphere, much to the displeasure of those near me.

Maybe you could strap a bag to your ass save the methane and use it to warm your house in winter.

Latest news.. SKorea bans beef stock.
It seems dodgy Chinese farmers have been feeding cows Clenbuterol, a chemical which can cause a rapid pulse, stomach ache and various heart-related disorders, to enhance muscle tone in livestock.
So think twice before eating your beef noodle soup.

The average human farts 14 times a day. (x 6 billion or so people)

Calculate that - someone who has the time...

Aren't most current cows a Genetically Modified creature?

So just genetically modify them to stop farting. You already modify them to have that snowflake marble kind of beef like Wagyu/Kobe/Angus Prime. You modified them to have big milk jugs to make your fine dairy. Now do it for Global warming and modify their rear end to reduce emissions!

Greenhouse effect? Global warming? hahahaha

Its funny whenever i come across people with no direct involvement discussing issues like these.
Try doing a little research. You will be surprised that the number of so called "experts" or "scientists" who swear by their claims of apocalypse due to human nature/ tendencies are equally balanced by people of same stature calling their claims hogwash.

Anyhoo, please do continue.

If anything, I'm more concerned with the stories about dubious Chinese shops injecting(!!?!??!) beef with WATER, to beef (pun intended) up the water content so it seems heavier.

Bloody hell.....

actually they do that water thing in the UK too......with chicken breasts, sausages, fruit, vegetables. Supermarket "economy" meat in the UK usually has a higher than normal water content. So basically, you're buying bloody water as well as the meat. Noticed why cheap sausages go berserk under the grill, or cheap economy chicken spitting a lot in the frying pan? Well, it's the high amount of water mixing with the hot fat.....there you go.

^ and they also do that to paper products that trash collectors collect and sell to waste processing centers.

The problem here is if those experts are right on global warming quite a few people are going to be up **** creek. And it aint going to be easy to reverse . The consequences here are not worth gambling on. People should start becoming aware.

back to cow flatulence

Fish Oil Could Curb Cow Flatulence

Specifically, including 2 percent fish oil in the diet of cattle reduces flatulence, apparently due to the omega 3 fatty acids in the oil. The study was a small one, however. The technique cut methane output of three cows by 21 percent, said Lorraine Lillis of the University College Dublin.

some folk are taking this serious.

Hardly call testing 3 cows "taking this serious" I would of thought that there is lot more areas of concern in the world than cows farting. So if we stop eating beef what do we do with cows? cull them all, just keep some for dairy production without using cows for meat or dairy they arent a lot of use.

Apparently someone has invented a food additive that prevents cows "passing wind". There is brief mention of it here.

Just need one for us and the world will be safe and fragrant

Maybe prevention is not the answer. Perhaps farmers are missing out on a untapped resource.
The relative abundance of methane and its clean burning process makes it a very attractive fuel. However, because it is a gas at normal temperature and pressure, methane is difficult to transport from its source.(wiki)

So if someone could manufacture a device to the cow (like below) that saves the gas escaping into the atmosphere the farmers could collect, store it and then sell it. No more need for burning coal ect. less global warming ...farmers get richer.
...simple

We don’t need to stop cows from passing gas. Assuming for a second that the test was correct, I am not sure where we are going to get all those fish oils to feed the cows without generating more harmful results.

We, from the western countries, just need to consume less…of everything. Take United States for example, we generate 6x the amount of waste per capita when compared to developing countries like China and India. We consume a lot more of everything and hence put out a lot more harmful gas than any cows will ever hope to compete with.

Why are we worrying about cows farting?

Dont you undestand what global warming is about?
heres a couple of links outlining the basics.
http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/7a.html
http://www.energy.ca.gov/2009publications/CEC-500-2009-025/CEC-500-2009-025-D.PDF

Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas hence it contribues to global warming. Since 1750, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have increased by more than 150%.
The primary sources for the additional methane added to the atmosphere (in order of importance) are: rice cultivation; domestic grazing animals; termites; landfills; coal mining; and, oil and gas extraction.

So some folk think its a good idea to reduce these emissions or the world's going to start cooking.

The North Koreans could arm their long range Taepodong rockets with a cow and a fuse. Then they will have a weapon of mass destruction. It would be a technological advance comparable to their recent satellite launch.

Whether real or not, get ready for the bankers of the World to lobby their politicians to tax the F out of this. Beef tax, crap tax, methane tax, etc . . . now they've done it. They've finally figured out how to actually tax $H!T. Brilliant.

Not strictly true ... apparantly in US there is no actual law in the constitution to say you have to pay tax.

see link

What would happen if everyone refused to pay tax?
They could not put eveyone in jail.

The question is will they rise?

Take a glass from your kitchen. Fill it with ice cubes and water all the way to the brim. Allow the ice cubes to melt. Does the water overflow the glass?

Thanks for that assurance sir. Can you quantify your info and your qualification. Id like to pass it on to relevent sources who seem to disagree.

For example one scientist who knows more about sea levels than anyone else in the world it is the Swedish geologist and physicist Nils-Axel Mörner, formerly chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change. And the uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner, who for 35 years has been using every known scientific method to study sea levels all over the globe, is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story.

The reason why Dr Mörner, formerly a Stockholm professor, is so certain that these claims about sea level rise are 100 per cent wrong is that they are all based on computer model predictions, whereas his findings are based on "going into the field to observe what is actually happening in the real world".
