Soccer ?

Postby foreverinchina » Sat Mar 13, 2010 9:57 pm

on CCTV9 they all the time are talking about the corruption and match fixing in soccer. But what they show during all that blabla is football, not soccer. Why they call it soccer ?
Why not football, just like in Chinese: zúqiú, 足球

I believe it originated from back in the old days when "real" sports were played on horseback. Poor people needed their own sport and so created this sport with the ball now know as American Football where they would use their feet to run instead of riding on the back of their horses.

in American football, they dont kick the ball that much, or seemingly do anything with it at all, so they shouldn't call it football. Perhaps chuckball. There, that sounds more American as well.

And the Chinese transliteration is also "foot ball".
The Vatican is against surrogate mothers. Good thing they didn't have that rule when Jesus was born.

'Soccer' was originally a slang abbreviation of 'association football' and was commonly used in England in the late 19th century. It may sound silly these days but it's definitely not an Americanism.

Whatever.
In standard English it is football.

The CCTV sports journalists, they know it is football. They can't get around it, talking about Champions League and FIFA. Ever heard of a FISA ?

Indeed, soccer is an English abbreviation. Heaven knows why anyone else, apart from the English, would refer to football as soccer.

Taken From Wiki Answers :) .... And does anyone know Bars where they will show the 2:30am World Cup games ?

The British invented Football, full name Association football, the term football is the formal name while soccer is its nickname that was created by the English inorder to distinguish it from rugby football. Soccer became a shortened reference to the word asSOCiation football. Therefore, Football's nickname soccer is often used to refer to football in countries where another form of football exist...example..

America = Gridiron (american football)

Australia = Aussie Rules (australian football)

Although...Australia have now referred back to the formal name Football having replaced soccer with Football in its official title.

I know people, even here in China, talking about going to the "restroom"
I know for sure that I saw them going to the WC/toilet/lavatory. These people, do they take a rest in their toilet ? Then, what do they in their bedroom ?

Having lived on both sides of the Atlantic I now refer to football as soccer just to avoid confusion (with the morons).
