Here's one more, a fat juicy meatball parm. Been pretty disappointed with what Shanghai has to offer on the meatball front.

Should be able to get a decent italian around town.

Tough to get good bagels here.
If you need a decent v-p-en, pm me for one that works well.

Yo Doogies....Not sure where you're from....But I like the way you like food....Not exactly fine dinning, but it's all good.......About Your Bagel, Nova, oinions, capers, and cream cheese.....Fugetaboutit....not going to happen....

There are some fine Italian Restaurants in Shanghai...Not for what you want.....Where I come from(NY) all the best baked parm dishes and Subs come from Pizzaria and Bar type places.....

I don't think you'll find what you're used to, anywhere in China......Maybe Jay Dee knows of some place.....He's a Jersey Boy, who knows about places with Pine Paneling on the walls and mounds of sauce and melted cheese on it's food......Oil and Vinegar on it
subs...

I remember where you're from...almost a Jersey Boy...

Suggest you make your own subs @ home, can get the rolls and such from various expat stores.
You can make your own meatballs better and cheaper @ home.
Buy an oven for baking/broiling and making pizza.
Buy a bread machine and make your own dough for breads and bagels.
Buy a grille for cooking steaks and burgers.
Buy a waffle maker and a deep fryer.
Not sure if you'll find veal of the same quality as in the States.
Certainly it's not as convenient as just going out but it's do-able and healthier too (TIC).
No need to sit on your butt and complain about it.

There are plenty of places for very good fine dining in Shanghai, but yes, it's the comfort food that I miss. Going back to NJ/NYC for Thanksgiving, and readily prepared to gain 10 lbs :D

I don't understand why places like Blue Frog and Johnny Moo can't have more American Chinese dishes. Plenty of American expats I know miss it.

This is exactly what I've been doing, In fact, I've become quite the cook since moving here five years ago. IMO I make the best meatballs and steak in town. Problem is cooking for just two people is not worth it. I like to cook for groups. When I'm hungry I like someone else to cook for me. Not to mention the cost of the ingredients at city shop, I might as well be eating out. I hardly ever leave that market spending less than 600.

Crystal Jade in XTD has some more authentic American style Chinese food. Proper wonton soup, lemon chicken, gongbao ji, beef and broccoli, few others. Citydeli.cn does a decent Italian sandwich but the place has gotten inconsistent "italian salami, sliced ham, lettuce, tomato, balsamic vinegar & olive oil on a kaiser roll or baguette"

Well meatballs can be frozen ya know.
Now, since you like cooking for groups ----
You can invite a few of your friends from SHXP over for lunch or dinner.
Maybe 20-30 people will show up if that's OK with the Mrs.

Comfort food these days is Jiao-Zi (dumplings) with red spicy La-Jiao. Keep pigging on this 2-3 times a week. Hole-in-the-wall place. 24 pieces for 10 kuai.

Hey theindianguy, I was wondering if you picked up on the trend of Indian food being more and more expensive on Shanghai. Punjabi regular dishes went from 45 to 50 rmb, Bukara was expensive to begin with. What gives? I lived in Ahmedabad for a year, very fond of Indian food, but it's becoming like fine dining in Shanghai. The dominoes pizza in India is some of the BEST pizza I've ever had, no joke! The thin crust pizza with spiced chicken, onions, hot peppers, and great sauce was excellent! Of course Gujarat was a veg state, so the best they had for me at the McDonalds was the McChicken and a chicken Big Mac.

One of the things I miss in Shanghai, is a good New York style pizza.
None of the Papa John's or Domino's bullsh1t, but a slice (or maybe two) good honest New York style pizza like they do it in Brooklyn.

Hi Handoogies,

Ahmedabad? Never been to that part of India. I was told that food there is sweet!

I agree, Indian food is like fine dining in SH! The last place I lived (Melbourne, Au), Indian food has almost become like street food there, very common. Some of the Indian restaurants in SH have food processing plants in China - NO need for them to import (most of their) spices from India. So some people are laughing their way to their banks. (Indian Kitchen is more reasonably priced than others)

How about Italian places in SH? Do they grow Basil, Oregano, Rosemary in China?
