Hey avrilovesydney,
Yes SA has it's ups and downs, and there are areas that are considered dangerous. However you could say that about any country if you're not well informed. As long as you're aware of your surroundings, and sensible about your holiday you should be okay. For instance as a women, walking alone at night would not be recommended. YOu need to be more aware of things like handbags, driving alone at night. I was born and raised there until I was 11 and have been back several times. It's just a matter of being aware I think and sensible as mentioned. If you can find holiday buddies I think that would be better than travelling alone - especially if it's your first time... Just my thoughts...

HI, South Africa went through a rough patch a couple of years ago where the crime rate skyrocketed, but the authorities have gone to a lot of trouble to stabilise things in the country and it's better now. South Africa generates a lot of money from tourism, and there is an emphasis on looking after tourists and not allowing crime to happen to them, you'll find plenty of information on which areas to avoid, or ways to visit certain areas (like khayalitsha for example) safely. The popular tourist destinations are very safe to visit, and there's no real reason why as a tourist you should get into trouble. I agree with kiwikells, so long as you're aware that you're not in the safest place in the world, and don't walk around alone at night, you'll be fine and have an unforgettable experience. I wish I was coming with you! Have a great trip!
