Post here if you want to discuss all the things you can do for fun in Shanghai.

SPACE

Postby sobie » Sun Oct 09, 2005 11:00 am

If you're familiar with Ibiza then you should recognize this
name.... SPACE. And the latest news is that they're opening
in Shanghai this October. Of course it has to be near an
airport because that's what they're all about so the venue
will be in HongQiao.
Dunno what to expect yet but I've neard that it can hold
4,000 people.
What excites me is that they'll be bringing in Ibiza DJs as well.

I went on Saturday night and thought the venue was pretty cool, even though its a bit far away.
Had lots of fun dressed in Halloween costumess (I was dancing on the main floor with huge black wings :) )
The inside is interesting, lot fake trees and stars on the roof. And finally for once not a table to be seen on the
dance floor! (and no dice either! fantastic)I really liked the Back Room with the Shakey floor and really
good music. Will have to go back and see what its like on a non-opening night. I'm not sure it'd be
as good if the dance floor isn't packed, its a very large floor.

Went there too and it was very impressive because of the huge place, stars and trees.
Was told it was an old KTV. A bit far for those who live downtown!!! However couldnt feel any good atmosphere, the party theme was Ibiza but except for the music and some Spanish people there were no real theme. This is the main problem in Shanghai nightclubs scene, there is no real atmosphere when organizers are throwing parties.
Was at La Fabrique on Friday night, it was supposed to be a Zorro night but it was a costume party for Halloween I guess...it was not well defined on the invitation. People seemed to get bored and many left very early.

I thought it was fun. Even though Shanghai's not known for its great clubbing vibe, this was actually quite enjoyable. I loved the ceiling. Loved the space. Music wasn't bad either. I'll go back there again. A bit of a pain in the arse to get to, but worth the trip if it keeps up or improves. A good start, Space!

Yeah.. what shakey floor?

Oh, but RMB60 a drink is a tad ridiculous though. And also, it'd be better if the bar staff actually knew what a drink was and not have to spend 10 mins trying to figure out what a whiskey coke is.
That's not you. That's the e talking.

I was there Sunday morning from around 2-4.
They obviously poured alot of money into the interior decorating and I think they did a great job.

I didnt get too into the music in the main room, thought it was a bit monotonous for my taste....a repetative beat going nowhere in particular...but I dont know anything about club music to begin with. And maybe I was too sober.

Their main marketing draw- the fact that the club is an (as they billed it) "Ibiza-style" massive, cavernous venue- is also their achilles heel: noone will want to be in there unless its packed.
I hope they do well. Its definitely something different in this city.

You managed to get drinks, Jenming?? Like in -more than one-??? I'm impressed...! Haha! I was temped to get behind the bar and help the staff out, guess they weren't really prepared for people ordering drinks.. (?)...

Anyway, place was ok. Defenitely huge..! Loved the trees and the ceiling full of stars! Music was ok too. Still, don't think Space will become one of my favourite places to go....

It was like a rubber floor that moved when people moved around it. Basically if most people are dancing to the beat you can pretend to be able to dance even if you cant :) if everyone is out of time then its a disaster :)

cks69 wrote:I heard the Djs didnt do a good job of getting the crowd going...anyone experience that?

Yeah around 1:30-2 the DJ was really bad and basically let the beat die! I was standing around for about 10minutes I think then headed into the backroom where the DJ was doing a much better job.

jenming wrote:oh man, i don't even wanna talk about getting drinks. >:(

:) I was quite tanked up already when I got there so didn't need to buy any drinks.

Ah so thats where you went! We thought you guys had left :)
Thing is when you open a bar that's supposed to cater for such a large number, you should be prepared to serve that many people!

Postby Witch_Pauline » Tue Nov 01, 2005 12:26 pm

Hey, guys
thanks for your post here.
I am the girl who was busy walking here there all night with black shirt, black skirt, and silver shoes.
Sorry for the bar and the lack of changes I have to confess, you know we opened in a hurry.
Yes, evev I myself went inside the bar table taking orders and carryig cases coz we were lack of ppl.
And yes, you were really kind enough if you might brought over us several cases of red bull, :)

And . see, I put everything in a note, the ppl all over the club knows what we are poor at, no wonder you come again with best service we can serve, and all of these week points we saw.

Please keep me updated.

Kisses.

Everythings gets better

We went again this Saturday....there were only 40 people at the most including staff. What a pity...it has such a proper club set-up. The opening night was pretty cool.. I like the "natural" feel to the club. If Space could bring guest DJs more often and have better marketing it might work out well. And maybe the other room could play chiller..loungier music? I don't see the need for 2 rooms playing the same genre. Then again I've never been to the original Space.

BTW..Jenming....you had fun on the bouncing dancefloor didn't you?

Why the hell did they open an enormous club way out at the edge of the city and in a city where there are already a fistful of regularly empty clubs?

Shanghai lacks a huge thumping dance club playing good music... pity.
