START A NEW BUSINESS HERE

Postby james223 » Wed Nov 24, 2010 10:41 pm

We are developing US and Europe markets these days, but it is so hard, people from those countries are very tricky, are foreigners becoming more vigilant when they came China?

Most of the foreigners I see coming here nowadays, are actually alarmingly naive. Not only with regard to doing business in China, but I would say to doing business in general.
Those who last for more than 2 years, sticking to their original plans are pretty rare here. A lot just end up teaching English. It's a bit like Hong Kong in the early 1990's.

Agree, I think the Chinese are about the trickiest people in the world. (after Indians, who know money very well). You come here naive, you are dead.
I was agent for China for an import wool company, and soon found it was almost impossible to strike a deal unless we could sell at LESS than cost.
Here, they never heard of, "to make a deal, you HAVE to allow the other side to make a $ "
Nah, they want that dollar as well. That is stupid in business.

I just did some teaching in a language centre where I was covering for a guy that was sick. All the other teachers there are trying to set up a business here. That seems to be the modus operandi for any English Teacher that comes here now. Arrive, start the ball rolling in terms of getting your WOFE, teach some English to pay the rent, set up the business and watch the cash roll in.

It's a joke.

James: On a side note, I have been involved in rental properties in Shanghai, for 6 years, dealing mainly with expats.
I would have to say, they are very difficult to deal with, as they feel they will be taken advantage OF, as expats with "MONEY", so they OVER compensate, and often become really mean A'holes, and become hard, or impossible to please.
That is another side of the coin.
So you could say Foreigners are becoming more vigilant. Yes.

All we did is to open the US and Europe market, so we signed these 2 contracts though made no money.

I remember talking to a bloke who was doing business with mainland Chinese in the late 1970's. He said they would always stipulate the contracts must include the clause: "AND THERE WILL BE NO TRICKS!"

I kid you not.

I agree. My guess is that many of those coming here now are people who have no real background in business whatsoever. I've met people here who haven't had the slightest idea about how sales/marketing works in their own home country. Then they come here, often without any real business plan, and just hope for the best. It might work, but most of them are fighting an uphill battle of biblical proportions.

How fantastic is that revolution9. Just love it.

Reminds me of when I was negotiating a lease for a Villa for a Consul General in the early 90's. The landlord's version was 1.5 pages with him having all the rights and the tenant having none. Then the Consulate handed their version which was 12 pages long and they had all the rights in the world. Why??? Because they were the US Gov't. :wink2::

We did finally get them both to agree on all terms and conditions and all was happy.

BTW, that was my very first deal in China and a very memorable one indeed.

Anything after that one has been "a piece of cake!!"
