I am wondering what the approximate starting salary would look like in Shanghai for:

1. A top tier (McKinsey/Bain/BCG) consultancy

2. A top tier (MS/GS/ML etc) investment bank

What I am looking for is the typical starting package for a graduate. If someone could help me with this, I would be more than grateful.

may i ask, are you the grad or are you hiring?

The corporate finance and fund management salaries look too low at the senior end, unless that's only base salary and excludes bonuses which make up the huge majority of the package. However, if that's the case, they seem a little high as base salaries.

I've not been in the loop as to what first year analysts make at ibanks these days. My guess is that if you're looking at doing advisory work in an ibank, you're probably looking at usd100k-150k for an average year as your first year's total comp, if you're based in HK. You obviously realize that this number varies greatly, depending on the bonus, which may not have been that great in 2007 for some groups.

In any case, be prepared not to have a life if you're looking at doing management consulting or investment banking.

I am definitely not the grad... too old and too tired to make the coffee and prepare copies of the pitch book in the middle of the night...

Just curious about what the salaries look like here in Shanghai (I am staying here for a couple of months). Seems like there is no real consensus and I have a difficult time getting a good picture of it all, so I just wanted to know a bit more about what is generally the easiest to grasp and compare across countries, i.e. entry level salaries.

What about the top consulting firms, are the salaries there just as high (compared to the average grad student salaries here)? Are there significant bonuses involved as well?
