Fixed that fore you ;)

About taxis to Suzhou, they run at least 300rmb. I've taken one. I negotiated 300 and the meter said 400 when we arrived.

I do think this is a pickpocketing attempt, because the guy actually followed me a few steps, and then try to put a in my pocket. In a reflex, I spun, grabbed his wrist. Only then did not happen, I think it would be a very bad is so easy to detect pick-pocketing. But it is fun to see those annoying guy recoil in fear card. Maybe he will be a little less aggressive next time.

A guy called to our apartment the other day and rang the doorbell, said he wanted to show the Apartment to somebody who might buy it from the landlord after our lease was up.

I was stupidly about to let him in when my missus grabbed the speaker and said she was surprised to hear the landlord was selling the place, was he sure? He said he was sure, and already had interested buyers.
Then she asked him the landlord's name and he said he forgot.

So she asked him to tell the landlord to get in contact with us personally and arrange a time for any viewing. The man never came back.

Not really sure what the scam was here, but sounded very fishy.

^ My policy - I don''t let ANYONE in. I tell my girlfriends to give ZERO information out about me, where I work, where I'm from and what hours I keep. If someone comes to the door I just say NO! and close it. One day a man in a uniform came to the door and said he was there to collect the gas money. He looked official and all but the owner had paid the gas bill recently and provided me with a copy so I knew the dude was full of shiiit. And the owner said he pays the gas only every 2 or 3 months. ( I cook a lot and am surprised that I only use 14 rmb of gas for 2 months.)

I consider myself lucky. The owner of the apartment is very nice to me and provides me with the original invoices for all utilities and he pays them and I pay him back. (For two months it only cost me 170 rmb for gas, electric and water.)

PICKPOCKETS!

Operating on the strip of Changshu between Changle and Julu. I was biking up Julu this evening, and a Xinjiang dude ran up alongside me and tried to pick my pocket.

In actual fact the one you gave them was fine but they will have swopped it on you. I have heard of this happening in Guangzhou. A pain to deal with this one as the only way to deal with it is to remember distinguishing features of every note you hand over (e.g. small rips) or write down the serial number each time.

A friend asked to borrow my pen last night, he was marking all his 100rmb notes.

i just read the first page of all the answers and it's quite late to give an answer after 5 years :/
but a friend told me to fold the 100rmb notes 2 times (by getting 3 equal areas) so the taxi driver or the guy in the bar knows he can't trick you.

I've been seeing the xinjiang women and their strap on kid a lot lately around Dapuqiao area ... so watch out for those mustache waidi looking peasants walking back and forth the street pretending to be lost.

Taxis for me also, catch a cab to work few days in a row - 25RMB.\

Last 2 days seems to take longer - 36RMB.. couldn't be bothered complaining

And again at the coat room at The Shelter, girl says its 5rmb, give her a 20, she moves on to the next person, I try to argue and she repeatedly says I only gave her a 5... *sigh*.

It's everywhere for lowai.

I gave the guy a hundred at Shanghai Brewery monday night and he took off with it for ages, couldn't even see him behind the bar. Came back about 10 minutes later with my change. I was sure he wasn't coming back, haha.

Last week at the local Mini-supermarket I had to pay 17 RMB, gave 50 and the guy returned me 63 RMB for Change. As if I would be to stupid to count. I bet he planed on me missing this. I was so angry. You can't trust anybody nowadays. Of course I complained immediately ... (much to the fun of that guys father). Beware people!

I've never been scammed here on the streets. I walk around shanghai at 110% the speed of a normal person with a 1000 yard stare in my eyes. Never even once had someone try to talk to me, any time of day or night.

Just don't talk to people and don't avert your gaze, and you can walk up and down east nanjing lu 100 times a day without a problem. When you are just walking alone, there is no reason for anyone to talk to you, unless they want something. Maybe i'm too anti social to be scammed.
