Subway to Pudong Airport - not a good idea (yet)!

Postby happylearner » Fri Mar 19, 2010 1:02 pm

Yesterday I left SH again via Pudong Airport.

Since the subway plan in the cars show already all stops up to Pudong Airport I thought I give it a try. For now the final stop was GuangLan/广兰. From there you have to walk a little to the main road to find a taxi - and then it's a RMB68 taxi ride.

Would have a bad choice (compare to the Maglev) is there wasn't this old Chinese dude selling fake English books (which I usually not support but it was his lucky day and I saw one that I really wanted so it was my lucky day too).

When does the subway go all the way to the airport? Looked ready to start anytime to me.

You can now go to Hongqiao on line 2. The new terminal opened on Tuesday and the subway link too. Not sure about Pudong there's much less urgency because you have the Maglev. Definitely before May 1st though.

So the new terminal would be providing services for domestic and Internatinal both ?? I never flew from Hong qiao (coz I live in Pudong) anyone recently flew domestically using Hongqiao's new terminal.

woohoo! no more waiting in that long-ass taxi line while flanked on one side by smokers who can't bear to live another minute without a drag, and on the other by exhaust fumes from the endless procession of idling taxis.

Terminal 2 is only domestic. The international flights go from the older terminal one. As before, it is only to the "B" airports in Japan and Korea (Gimpo and Henada). All other internationals need to fly from Pudong.

If you want to fly into Tokyo (Haneda) and not hours away in the city of Narita (1.5 hours away from Tokyo by car!), then you have to fly from HongQiao.

Unless I'm flying to Europe or the Americas, I always fly from HongQiao. Pudong is very inconvenient for Asian flights.

I read that Guang Lan will always be the "last stop", then you have to change to another train and proceed to Pudong Airport. Not sure if this is already up, but maybe you did not see the other train? From Guang Lan to PVG is another 25 minutes by subway

Maglev a.k.a Fast magnetic train all the way !!
Much more Ease & 8 mins to the terminal but less domestic flights and usual delay of an hour on average.
Thanks for Hongqiao update.

...but the subway map in the line 2 trains show that line 2 will go all the what to Pudong (eventually).

When I arrived in Guang Lan yesterday I ask for transport and was told that there is only taxi, no bus either. Guang Lan was also definitely the last stop yesterday.

I guess it may open before the expo start.

You can now go to Hongqiao on line 2.

Why would I go to Hongqiao if my flight is from Pudong? I tend to go to the airport were I depart from, rather then the one most convenient to go.

Out of curiousity, where did you leave from and how long did the trip take? Anyone take the metro to Hongqiao yet and how long did that take?

hi, can someone confirm for me if there is a subway from Pudong to the Bund area?
would it be more fun to take the subway for a first time visitor to SH from the airport to my hotel, or should I just get a taxi?

If you have lots of bags then forget it. If travelling light you could consider it. Line 2 goes to Nanjing East station which is fairly close to the Bund (about 500 metres).

I always take first time visitors back on the maglev, subway seems boring and taxi is more expensive and all you see is outskirts and crappy buildings. Depends on how many people you bring back, taxi might be cheaper but.... I like maglev, especially dont tell them how fast it will go. They will be amazed every time. PVG to Longyang Road in 7 minutes, 432 km/hour tops... welcome to Shanghai. I chose this every time because its the fastest and a lot more fun than sitting in a smelly cab all the way downtown.

From longyang road (end stop of maglev train), just take subway line 2, and get off and Nanjing East road, takes about 5 stops i guess. From there its a 5 minute walk to the Bund area.

take the maglev to the subway station - it's faster and cheaper. and i think it's the same line that will take you to lujiajui station (bund).

Faster, yes. - Cheaper - No

If you take the maglev 40 rmb then you still have to change at LongYang Lu station to line 2 subway which will cost you an addditional 4 rmb to the Nanjing East Station (bund) and take you about 40-45 minutes with the transfer time and waiting for the Maglev/Subway. If you take line 2 directly from Pudong International airport it will cost you only rmb 7 but will take about 1 hour 10 minutes.

I used to do the Maglev/Subway combination as it was the quickest but since I carry 3 - 70lb suitcases plus my carry on every trip it makes the transfer with security scanners kind of a pain at LongYang Lu so now I just take line 2 directly from Pudong airport to my stop which is Century Park and have done this several time since it has opened. Takes a little longer, but more convenient.

Operating time for the Airport subway?

Thanks for any info...

Doesn't cost 50rmb for one way Maglew? 40 is only for the guys with on day ticket from or to catch the plain. I like to go for the metro too. you sit around have a fun listen music, do not need to go anywhere with your luggage. (just one tiny short transfer) and it is quite convenient.

And last few stops are above the ground so you can watch what is going on on the hood :)

PS: about the time. i think it is running like normal metro time. But better check.

From Jingan, I think ? it is 8rmb an about 1 hour 30 minutes. maybe get a hard plastic seat, and
maybe not sit next to someone smelly or yelling on the phone. I believe same hours as normal
subway. stops around 10-11pm, starts around 5:30am

I'd rather pay 20rmb for a 1 hour ride on a coach bus.

There are terminals around town. There is one in Jing'An, adjacent to the metro station, line 2. There's also one by the railway station (central/north), but the bus is only parked in the street. Not sure if they renovated already.
