suggested 4 day itinerary in shanghai

Postby samsontech » Sun Jul 25, 2010 8:07 pm

greetings everyone. again im nick, a filipino and will be in shanghai with my fiance on sept 15-20.

this will be my second time to visit shanghai but during my first trip i didnt really enjoy it coz it was work related.

i know you get this question a lot and i might be reprimanded for asking it again. but here goes...

so we have 4 days to spend in shanghai (16, 17, 18, 19). we arrive 11pm of sept 15 and leave 1am of the 20th

we dont have a place to stay yet so i cant tell you guys which tourist attractions would be near us. can you guys suggest an itinerary for us? and also what would be the best places to visit? and also after seeing the karate kid, my fiance would like to visit beijing as well. can that fit our schedule?

your opinion matters, so thanks alot.:-)

ps: my fiance loves shopping so we might fit nanjing road and yu yuan market in the schedule...

To be honest if you wake up early and start in pudong, then head to puxi, you can do all of that in 2 days

Why don't you start in BJ, spend the night there and a day sightseeing, fly to SH early the next morning. Four days is very tight to fit too much in, so depending on what is most important to you, either fit it in, or leave it out. On Pudong side, most tourists go to see the skyscrapers, and then head over to Puxi for everything else.

Qi bao? if the OP is only in Shanghai for 4 days, wouldn't waste time going there

actually we didnt really plan to go to beijing. and when my fiance decided that she wants to go there also, the flight was already booked. it's a promo so it's non-rebookable i think.

should i allot 1 day for going around pudong? if so, what are the tourist attractions there?

16th - Shanghai museum @ people's park, nanjing road east, the bund - dinner at a bund restaurant (new heights/ M/ M1nt.. not sure where's best these days - that's another thread) then go out to Xintindi for a few drinks
17th - Expo then SWFC (bottle opener)
18th - Taikang lu, then fly to beijing to arrive for dinner - go to houhai (northernmost city lake near to the drum & Bell tower) for a great taste of alleyway living and great little bars & restaurants.
19th - great wall (morning at mutianyu); forbidden city then fly back to shanghai and directly to Manila

will be busy, but fun!!

Apart from the main part of World Expo being in Pudong there is the fake market at the Science & Technology Museum's subway stop. If your girlfriend likes to shop then this is THE PLACE to go.

Use the subway to get you from A to B as much as possible as the traffic is pretty bad.

I think the other members have given some good suggestions and I wouldn't bother with Qibao......no time.

Please bear in mind the ques for entry into World Expo as well as pavillions so I would allocate a day for it.

Definitely do a dinner somewhere like Bund 3 - New Heights/Jean George's or M on the Bund as the view is stunning. Make sure you book a table by the window.

Hope you enjoy your stay. :D

yeah i've been to the bazarre at the sciecne and technology museum subway stop. it was really nice, not as crowded as the yu yuan market though they sell similar stuff.:-)

and so i placed the expo and science and tech museum/bazarre on the same day. is the 4d cinema in the museum worth seeing? some say it is well worth it.:-)

also after the expo and museum, is it convenient to go to the oriental pearl tower next?

4D cinemas are so one second ago. You should save your pennies for a real 11D experience. Very useful for appreciating the finer points of superstrings, M-theory and the Standard Model.
The bottom line here is we must lower our cost base to make room for a lower margin product mix world and to grow our earnings going forward.

Not sure about the name, but the address is 580 Nanjing West Road. Just google it; it's between Nanjing West Road metro station and People's Square metro station.

If you want an alternative to the contrived tourist spots such as Xintiandi and Taikang Lu, I would suggest staying in Hongkou possibly stay at the hostel on Duolun Lu. The area is much more interesting than Xintiandi and the surrounding area, with unrestored Shikumen lanes that are in a much more vibrant and atmospheric environment. It's great for walking about or cycling, Lu Xun Park is one of the nicest parks in Shanghai. A walk from Hongkou down to the Suzhou creek along Zhapu Lu will give you a much more authentic/romantic experience of Shanghai. Xintiandi/Taikang Lu could be anywhere in the world its just bland insipid globalization in effect. The masses do seem to like it and it's characterless and expensive bars and restaurants though, it depends on what kind of experience of Shanghai you want.

An expo suggestion: go at night. After 5pm or so there are no queues for tickets and very few for the expo pavilions, especially if you're okay with going to lesser-known ones. I've been twice around 7pm and gotten my money's worth out of the 90rmb ticket, seeing more pavilions in the 3 hours than most people I've spoken to who spent the full day.

Whats the hype with expo shanghai? it doesnt really attract me at all, whenever i think about it, i picture a mega expo with fancy pavillions and millions of chineses taking pictures, japan style 1980-90

but dont worry about my comment, i guess i gotta be there first before judging it

i was able to enter the hk and macau pavilion (to take footages) and i gotta say i enjoyed it. and that wasnt even 10% of the whole expo. that's why i wunna go back.

Hi there, I am a Shanghai resident, I would like to give you some of my ideas:
Depending on where you stay, the following places are worth visiting:
Puxi Area:
1.Yu Garden - shopping(Chinese souvenir) and sightseeing;
2.Xintiandi and Huaihai Road - visit and dining; Or Taikang road for visit and dining (pick for one)
3.Nanjing road east and the bund - sightseeing (better to see at night)
4.580 nanjing road(Nanjing road west) for shopping (fake market)

Pudong:
1. SWFC (bottle opener) and taking photos around Lujiazui Financial Center
2. Dining/Drinking at the bund (Pudong side), along the Huangpu river

If you want to visit expo, then I would recommend you to take the ferry at below dock to go to the expo:
Shiliupu Water Gate(Dock) 十六铺码头
By bringing the expo tickets, you can take the ferry for free, and you can see the beautiful scenery alongside for 30mins
Tips:
No ticket selling at the dock, so you must buy the expo ticket in advance;
There are 14 scheduled vessels everyday
8.30am / 8.40am / 9am / 9.20am / 9.40am / 10am / 10.20am / 10.40 am / 11.00 am / 11.40 am/ 12.00pm / 4.00pm /4.20pm / 4.40pm

email me if you have any further inquries, and I would like to help.
