I spoke to one of my pals in the furniture industry here about this. Ikea as you know is a status symbol for the locals. Almost a sex symbol. Apparently, many families will spend a day there as an outing, just like going to a zoo or an amusement park. For them its like living in a real posh home with AC on, and it's all free, so why not? To have their photo taken there is proof that they have a home that they can furnish in western style (even if they dont really), just like they see on ICS, CCTV and in the magazines. And the photo serves as a souvenir of their great elevation of status for the day. Apparently they will rarely buy any furniture, but they do buy the little bits and bobs in the 50-100 RMB range, more as souvenirs than anything else - again, just to prove that they have been there - a momento of their day living as kings. Apparently, Ikea are making a killing selling this cheap junk/souvenirs.

The restaurant food quality was acceptable for the price, quite typical supermarket canteen food, but agree that with the pesky spoilt brats running around and people coughing up their guts, its not a pleasant eating experience.

The big warehouse section is a much nicer experience, as its empty (no sofas to sit on, no beds to sleep on, and its near the cashier tills which the locals stay away from).

Been there once, and never again.

bingo. exactly. i was there last week buying a carpet and some sofa pillows and guess what both these sections are empty. my suspicion is that locals either dont buy from ikea or have not much interest in 'accessories' such as sofa pillows or carpet.

majority of local shoppers do not like carpets, espcially in shanghai. mainly because of humidity and dirt reasons. good time to go to ikea. after schools have opened up again and also only during weekdays.

But seriously WHY is this place so hygienically challenged?? What is wrong with people. It's really f*c*ing incredible.

i like to idea of an IKEA movie in SHA.... good one. i'm sure HQ in sweden won't like it as a corporate image of them floating on youtube.

the locals sitting around taking pictures in an all IKEA enviroment posing as their home is just a killer.
if china is disneyland on crack (sorry, still cracks me up...), then IKEA in the summertime in SHA is like the seven dwarfes gangb***ing snowwhite. and worse.

Sadly its not the PLACE that is so hygenicallly challenged, its the crowd it attracts and cannot seem to get rid of during the summer months (well usually too, but worst when school is out).

God western people can be so disgusting -_-

Been there yesterday and thought it was quite fun, despite being a bit busy...
we got to test all couches and even tho there are many ppl on them its not as bad as many of you portray it to be... It was also quite clean despite all the ppl (altho im not sure what standards you guys have...)

Back in Holland all i hear is everyone complaining about how foreigners never live as we do, they can't adjust to our life and just live their own which really irritates most people (hence the big popularity of an (perhaps extreme) right party in holland at the moment)...

Now when western people are in a foreign country, like china, they still want the locals to adjust to them... quite disgusting... so yea let the chinese have fun, its their country and they can do whatever they like with the store if you dont like it, get your ass back to your local ikea ...

i for one can say i liked my time in this ikea way more than my time in the dutch ikea.. shopping for furniture is boring anyway, but at least the things to see here make it a bit of fun... Food was ok (meatballs, yumyum) and cheap...

IKEA - China = McDonald's - Russia

Muscovites mad for McDonald's

Broadcast Date: Jan. 31, 1990

The Reds are flocking to the Golden Arches. It's opening day for newest (and biggest) restaurant in the McDonald's chain, on Pushkin Square in Moscow. A Big Mac, fries and a soft drink costs half a day's wages, but thousands are lining up to get a taste. CBC reporter Don Murray samples a range of reactions from Muscovites for whom the food is unfamiliar and the friendly service is downright foreign.

I think anyone who picks their nose, wipes it on whatever they please, farts, burps, sh*ts, pisses in public, is disgusting- anybody who doesn't have a basic sense of respect for others and their surrounds and shares their nasty fluids and body functions with others - whether those people are western or asian- it doesn't matter to me. Just plain nastiness. Keep it to yourself in your own home. nobody wants to see that junk.

Who cares about “corporate image” when you have as many customers as they do?

I know several people who work at HQ and believe me, IKEA make sh*t loads in China…………………

It says a lot that it took some of China's "greatest thinkers" to come up with the idea that farting or crapping in public and growing tiger claws for digging out one's magic nose goblins may have been at least partly to blame for the lack of respect from Whitey, and that those habits needed to be rectified. It says even more that after a hundred years (off and on I guess) of government mandated public awareness campaigns, those problems still remain.

Sorry but I think this is a bit of an over-reaction. I don't see this as an Ikea issue it's how people behave in general in China. I can't believe OP actually complained someone was texting on his mobile phone (shock horror). Like that doesn't happen elsewhere. Good or bad, you can't seriously expect Ikea in China to refuse to accept the Chinese behaving the way Chinese people behave in their store.

The behaviour may be hard to tolerate but you're living in China. Parents don't just let their kids pee in Ikea. They allow it everywhere. It's like saying why does KFC not force people to line up in an orderly line at the cash tills, shame on them.

I went to Ikea last weekend. It was busy, lots of people looking and not buying. I can't say it bothered me enough to write about it.

Agreed, it's not an Ikea issue at all. It's unfortunately par for the course here. I think maybe the OP thought that Ikea had better/different standards?

I know many Chinese people who hate the place also sometimes, usually the Starbucks visiting elite, who hate the behaviour also. On the Metro yesterday, I saw a guy draw a massive snot from his nostrils, down to his throat, ready for fire...but he kept it in there and waited before he got off before firing a 21-gun salute from his gob. It shows they are learning. Slowly.

Actually, we have to thank swine flu. More and more people are aware that this disease can be spread by saliva ... Last time I saw someone spitting in the metro, about 30 people stared at him REALLY angrily.

Go go global diseases !

I was there last week with my (Chinese) gf. I noticed exactly the same issues. While i was thinking "TIC", this is probably normal here in this country, it was my gf who told me it was totally unacceptable. She made almost the same remarks as you.
No, this in not just China, this is IKEA allowing their visitors to behave like this. I guess this must be part of their marketing strategy in China.

I finally just bought gooseberry marmalade and meatballs...

What is IKEA doing about this? Why can't they do crowd control at the restaurant?
Or get their staff to stop people from using the store as their opium den?
