The HORRORS of IKEA.........

Postby Jolynne » Sat Jul 18, 2009 7:39 am

We just came back from our yearly shopping trip at IKEA and I just have to say that we were sickened, disgusted and shocked at what we saw going on in there. First off when we walked in we were met with one of the filthiest dining areas I have ever seen. There was food everywhere, dirty dishes, the tables had not been cleaned, some of the locals were spitting on the floor and we saw 2 parents changing their childrens diapers on the tables that customers use for eating. After that horror show we went into the buying area where the grossness just continued. There were people laying on the sofas, some were sleeping, others checking their text messages, one guy was laying there picking his nose and then wiped his fingers on the cushions. In the kitchen displays one guy was sitting on the counter in his shorts talking on his phone. When we got to the bedding area, we stood there in disbelief. Almost every single bed had the locals laying in them!! Some were under the covers, others were sleeping, couples laying together, talking, eating and the ones that were empty the blankets and sheets were in disarray. The model rooms were just so dirty and disorganized, there was hair in the beds, on the counters, and it was just overall not appealing. Some of the staff were just standing around, doing nothing. I would have thought that they should be cleaning or straightening out the rooms.
There was a couple of other things that we found quite strange and puzzling and they are:

1) What is it with the Chinese posing on beds and sofas and their friends, partners taking pics of them? The funniest thing was these 3 girls who were posing provocatively on the beds and chairs while their friends took pics. We also saw familes doing portrait shots all lined up just like those postcards people send out during the holidays.

2) Numerous amounts of women wearing skirts sitting with their legs spread wide open. You could see everything!!

We have been to IKEA in Canada and London and we have never ever seen anything like what we saw yesterday. You would not be permitted to do these kinds of things and I have no idea why they allow this. The other frustrating thing was that there was a ton of sales people there but no one was around when you needed them. They all seemed to cluster together and when you needed one you had to go searching. When you did find them, they would all be huddled together and chatting. Overall just a really bad experience, it is sad because IKEA for the most part has some nice things. Thanks for listening, I just had to vent and this is the perfect place to do it........

I have not been to IKEA in over a year and the last time we were there it was not as bad as it was yesterday. To answer your question I have been in Shanghai for over 3 years and no I did not see a post about IKEA detailing what I wrote about. Sorry........

Went to IKEA about a month ago and same with Jolynne, saw some people sleep on the couches like they were at home. Almost all of the couches on display have people sitting on them as if it's the waiting area.

See now, I have been twice since we moved here, and it's not been anything like that. But I went in May/early June, midweek, midday. I think though that going this time of year is probably a problem. The kids are out of school and it's hot. So think about it, if you live someplace that is hot and the kids are overexcited with nothing to do, why wouldn't you head to the great big giant store full of comfy sofas and loads of things for the kids to play with? Makes perfect sense to me. So I'll wait to go again until September, and go on a Wednesday morning.
Cack, my blog is buggered.

Anyway, that is big step of China from a Bazaar to Ikea, right ?

I always loved it, especially 1 rmb ice cream, unlimited coffee and Swedish food.

What bad with free trial of sofa or chair ? I guess it was great idea and IT IS SELL.

I hate this time of year in Shanghai. I also notice that everywhere with A/C is jampacked and people act like they are in their own home. Will also avoid until September unless local schools are back in August.

here's how I do Ikea: at the top of the escalator do a hard, hard past the billboard. Behind the billboard are the stairs down to the actual shopping. Grab a cart and fight the gridlock. I have a friend that will ONLY go to Ikea on a weekday evening when it is somewhat pleasant.

So has Ikea changed its A/C policy? last August when it was unbearable, I was told that they adhered to the govt policy of setting the thermostat to 30c (86 F) to conserve power-it was awful!

I like Ikea's meetballs and mash potatoes. Only go there for this if in the area though. So far and full of wankers usually.

The 2-3 times I've been to IKEA here it hasn't been that bad...
Sure there's a lot of people, sure they shout in their phones, sure they take pics all over the place, sure the kids run around unattended screaming, sure it can be hot as a mofo, sure there's food and drink leftovers on the tables, sure there's people who will bump into you, sure you'll bump into people, sure there's people sleeping in odd places...
But hey.. That happens every day all over this place doesn't it? If not you must live in a very very special part of Shanghai.

I enjoy the "Swedish" meat balls thou...

You could take a photo and email to local newspapers or post it on youtube with a title like "Live soft fluffy at Ikea, Shanghai - totally legal"

that's standard for ikea here I reckon! it is disgusting tho! I couldn't believe the number of people lying on the display models when we were trying to buy a sofa - and they wouldn't move so we could actually work out which one we wanted to buy!

The most disgusting thing I ever saw there was last time I went (and I haven't been able to bring myself to go back since) - a 2 or 3 year old boy being encouraged by his mother to pee inside the collection warehouse area down one of the rows. I couldn't believe it and told the security guard who... yes you guessed it - laughed and did sod all!

I always wash everything I get from Ikea as soon as it enters the house cos it's all so yucky and dusty - I know they say they are cheap for a reason but ..... surely they should do something about it! and while they're at it they can stop all those annoying taxi drivers who follow you around if you have more than one thing in your trolley.

I once saw a guy holding a plastic shopping bag open in the bedding department, whilst his son, pants down around his ankles, proceeded to urinate in it. He then tied it up, and carried it on with him.

NEVER go on weekends.

Someone should make a short film and send it to their HQ, and post it on YouTube.

As with any other place in Shanghai/China - eg; McDonalds, KFC (where people treat these places like hotels or restaurants to eat their own food), shopping malls, etc etc etc.

Chinese people see these places often as a form of entertainment too.
