Sashas now has some wine specials at RMB30/glass, nothing great, but still OK for bargain hunters.

Surprisingly, the Blarney Stone has recently expanded their wine list. In addition to the 2-3 wines by the glass, they have added about a dozen available by the bottle only, starting from RMB285 for a respectable E.Guigal Cote de Rhone. Wine lovers, take a look!

Anyone been to Vino Villa in Jinqiao or Vino Venue in Hongqiao? What are they like? Apparently the Jinqiao joint is managed by someone called Anders, while the Hongqiao place is some sort of art gallery with wine.

Where in Jin Qiao is the Vino Villa?

The Ho Red Wine Shop is at the corner of Biyun Lu and Baihua Lu in Jin Qiao. Small selection but a few nice choices to be found. A bit heavy on French and Australian stuff.

Tried a really nice italian red from Masi recently. Good with and without food.

@travelinjack, the correct name for what I called Vino Villa is actually Villa Nova, and is on Hongfeng Lu, don't know the address.

vinovilla

Postby fredgranisch » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:38 pm

I went to Vinovilla a while ago, and saw that it was very similar to Enoteca in Puxi which I enjoy very much. The menu was the same as well as many other things, and when I asked Enoteca staff they told me they had nothing to do with it. I won't go there again and do not recommend it for these reasons. Shame on you Vinovilla!

very similar to Enoteca

What? they sell mediocre wine?

Enoteca is ok, but their BIGGEST mistake is only using their own wine. They need something a bit different.

Was at Enoteca again last week. Had their own label Enoteca St Emillon. Approx 280/bottle i think. Quite good. Opened right up. Any St Emillon at this price is a bargain, and this one was actually better than average.

Food wise though, not good. Ordered Quiche of the day, which was apparently Mushroom. What came was Tuna, as i discovered after i had first taste. I don't do Seafood so not happy.

I love Vino Villa, and I sure hope they don't disappear. Excellent food menu, too--the cheese and charcuterie platter is the BEST, and I love the outdoor seating. Interesting wine selection (not huge, but adequate) with reasonable prices. Also love their SPOTLESS wine glasses! Gonna buy some! It is the best place in Jinqiao to hang out with a few friends over a glass or two of wine. Truly. We don't have many options in the neighborhood....

Went to the Grace Vineyards shop on Ruijin Er Lu / Jianguo lu after hearing they make Chinese wine that doesn't taste like vinegar or drain cleaner. Felt daring and picked up their pinot noir, thinking "well if they can do a pinot they can do anything". On pouring consistency was somewhat pale/watery, however the taste was certainly paletable, although reflected the lack of body evident in the colour. One of their more expensive options at a hundred-summin. Impressed enough to give some of their other varietals a try. After the likes of Great Wall and Changyu though, i suppose the bar wasn't too high...

Whats people's opinion on the homegrown series of wines called "Shanghai 1939 and 2001" - the bottle design is nasty but what's your opinion on these wines?

Also, I know its a really tough one but is Tokaji from Hungary available in Shg?

Cheers

Actually Sweeny I saw a Tokaji in the Grace Vineyards shop!

Isn't the Shanghai 1939 and 2001 huangjiu?

Yeah I think he's talking about that Huang Jiu stuff, not wine at all, more like a kind of sweet Sherry.

I don't mind it, but couldn't drink it every day.
