The Wine Thread

Postby winopete » Wed May 24, 2006 2:04 pm

As the beer thread on this forum is doing so well, it's time we had a wine thread too. So here it is!...

Tomorrow night (Thursday), there's a free tasting of some Australian wines from the Karumba region at the Gourmet Shop in the Marriott Hongqiao Hotel from 7-9pm. Wines featured will be cab sav, shiraz and chardonnay.

As the Marriott Hongqiao is so close to Ruby Red, I'll try to make a visit to RR beforehand. Any other winos care to join me?

I like dry, crisp whites. Especially Spanish ones. I'm trying to keep my wine budget down, and found that Dynasty white is pretty decent, at 28 rmb a bottle. This sounds crazy cheap, but it's about the same price I paid in California for really good Spanish whites imported by Trader Joe's.

It's getting warmer so I'll be drinking more whites and rose's. But i'm bored with Aussie chardonnays, etc. Anyone know any secret finds for good cheap whites?

Australian verdelhos are nice, but I'm not aware if any reasonable priced ones are stocked by Carrefour etc. You may consider checking out some New Zealand sauvignon blancs too. Two budget-priced whites I like are the Ruffino Orvieto (dryish) and the Torres Vina Esmeralda (fruity), - both great when drunk chilled in hot weather.

Hey Winopete, good thread.

Friday, there is another of Senses famous free tastings also. South African wines

Good Cheap whites. hmmm... Chilean is probably best. However, a friend of mine is a consultant for Dongni winery in Qingdao. they do a really good Riesling. You will find it at that Japanese Supermarket below City Plaza.

For nice crispy wines, try the NZ Sauvignon Blancs, although they will be around 150rmb each in the Supermarket.

For Rose. I really believe the Banrock Station white Shiraz is great. Again it will be over 100rmb/bottle.

I've always been into the heavy reds but, as I get older I find myself liking whites more and more.

In the hot weather a spritzer could be refreshing, do you have any recommendations (reasonable price) for a suitable wine for a white spritzer?

Thanks Winopete, I have a few bottles ready for you to try ( some Spanish, Argentinian, French and Italian). All these will be open to taste tomorrow.

Regarding cheap and cheerful whites, we have some good Italian and Chilean cheapies
New Zealand sauvignon blanc are a bit pricy but well worth it if you want to spend the money.

Also we are looking at some new products with some inventive packaging, will be trying it tomorrow as well. Apparently promoted by Paris Hillton not sure if it is a good or bad thing !!!

"Anyone know any secret finds for good cheap whites?"

i love this 'Louis pervier' or sth from jinqiao carrefour and yangpu auchan ( f-ing great supermarket for foreign booze if ur in this area btw, cheapest in town) . bout 48-58 a bottle. anything sparkling dry and white is good with me when it is hot.

went to a large chinese supermarket, sorry dont know name, but above KFC, zhongshan bei lu near Hongkou. ' Dominio de Fontana" Crianza at 13.5% and less than 30 rmb is a beautiful drop.

wine here now is cheaper than UK, very much impressed

wow, great suggestions. so far i've been very disappointed with New Zealand sav blancs. Maybe just unlucky so far, or maybe they're all just a higher price than i'm willing to pay. I almost forgot about the Chilean whites, which I have had good experiences with.

The ' Dominio de Fontana" Crianza is still available???? I bought a few cases at this place in xujiahui, over the winter, but those are gone now.

This appeared in the Telegraph online. No doubt FL will see a conspiracy.

New World wins again in a vintage rematch
By Sally Pook
(Filed: 25/05/2006)

At the time it was unthinkable. French wine, surely the finest in the world, was put to a blind taste test against the best California could offer.

It was 1976, the tasting was in Paris, and wine from the New World was considered no better than cheap Retsina. Imagine the heart-stopping moment, then, when nine experts, all French, ruled that Californian wine was superior.

Steven Spurrier at the London tasting yesterday

"You cannot underestimate how much the 1976 tasting shocked, and then revolutionised, the wine industry," said Steven Spurrier, who staged the event. "It was iconic, the first chinese in France's armour, and a huge, huge shock."

The Judgment of Paris, as it has become known, was re-enacted yesterday, 30 years to the day after the original, with two teams of tasters in London and the Napa Valley, California, thanks to Mr Spurrier's wit and ingenuity.

The London tasting, held in the cellars of Berry Bros & Rudd in Piccadilly, included all of the original red wines tasted in 1976, along with new French and Californian wines, representing the best that has emerged from the two regions over the past 30 years.

Part of the point of the exercise was to see whether the 1970s Californian reds had aged as well as the great Bordeaux first growths. The views of nine of the best European tasters will be made known today.

Jasper Morris, one of only 250 Masters of Wine in the world, and the buying director of Berry Bros, said: "The Judgment of Paris was a wake-up call to the French.

"Wine-growers prone to complacency were forced to smarten up their act but it was also a rallying cry to other potential wine-growing countries."

At the time of the judgment, Mr Spurrier was running a small wine shop in Paris, the only Englishman to do so. He considered a Californian wine-tasting a suitable way to celebrate the American Bicentennial - and thought it would be fun to test it against the French.

At the tasting of 10 red and 10 white wines, evenly split between French and American in both classes, the panel awarded the top place in both categories to Californian wine. A Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 1973 topped the white wines, beating famous French names such as Puligny-Montrachet.

In the red category, a Stag's Leap Cabernet-Sauvignon 1973, now unobtainable, beat names such as Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1973 (now roughly £100 a bottle).

There was only one journalist there. The French media stayed away, assuming the result would be a bore.

George Taber, of Time, did attend, mostly, it was said, because he was on a wine tasting course. He had a scoop

The half price Happy Hour wines by the glass at Sashas are a good deal:Concha Y Toro, Delicato and George Debeouf at RMB50, 55 and 60 regular prices respectively are all half price during HH (5-7pm daily). The Concha Y Toro sauvignon blanc is my favourite of the three. For reds, there's also an Aussie Kingston Shiraz by the glass (can't remember the exact price, but it's either 50 or 55 for a glass; also 1/2 price during HH).

Any ShExpat readers going to the sauvignon blanc tasting at Ruby Red on Saturday night? I don't know how many wines are in the tasting, but for RMB100, it sounds good to me, based on other tastings I've been to there.

Hi Winopete, here is the link to the tasting, there will be 6-8 wines ( I am having problem getting hold of one particular wine) so may or may not have it. And matched with 4 courses of food.
I will also post something in the events area.

If you haven't been to a Summergate wine tasting before, then I suggest you do. They always give you great value, lots of wine and snacks. Last night's French wine tasting (George Duboeuf) at Pier One was great: 17 wines to try in 90 minutes, plus a good range of snacks, for RMB150.
Shame the venue was rather small for the large number of people who turned up (had to pre-book).
