seeing as how this is really just another "bitch at china" thread, i'm going to add a recent one of mine.

as i'm exiting through a doorway (i'm pushing the door outward), occasionally someone approaching on the other side tries to slip IN before i can get OUT. last time someone tried this, i just swung my backpack into his body to block him until i, my luggage, and my companion could get through the door first.

Interesting. I'm finally abroad again here in Shanghai after a stint in Paris in 98. Back then, there was no such thing as a forum and nil thread. I like these days. You guys are interesting and relevant to me! I'm 4 months off the boat now...and digging it. It's cool to be able to know what may piss a person off beforehand. You never know when you may need to use or not use this. I will stop thanking people so much for now. Do I really have to not smile so much though?

You could not smile, but why? I find that as I am walking around or on the subway or somewhere that there are so many things that I have heard or witnessed that make me want to smile. I have been on the subway and reading a particularly funny book and laughed out loud only for Chinese people around me to either be startled by it or curiously wondering what is so funny. It seriously comes to something when other peoples lives are filled with such a lack of joy or basic happiness that when others express it, it is considered something weird. Poor f*ckers. Imagine their lives.

Oh and for the record, these are not the thoughts of some hippy trippy happy clappy bullsh*t. I'm not going to say something about laughing and the world laughing with you. I think happiness is easy, just get up and be happy, it's so easy a child can do it, in fact they do, adults forget how. I get told by Chinese people all the time that my life is 'colourful' because I do things that is within the realms of anyone.

Go on the subway today and look at peoples faces. There's not so much a lack of happiness on their faces, so much as a look of sheer terror, confusion and great depression. For some people, this city sucks the very life out of them and spits them out.

Imagine that.

I think they think its annoying that we actually obey the subway rules??

Oh I love the subway, nothing better than ramming your 6'5 heavy body through a swarm of chinese when they try to get in the cabin before you are even out.

The other day I got off at people's square again, I love people's square and only for 1 reason and that is that I know tehre will be 30 people trying to jam themselves in the doors before I get a chance to get off. So I made sure I'm in front of the doors, the subway gets to a halt and the doors open to let me go out. In a split second 20 people try to jump inside but I wont let them, blocking their way and pushing them all the way back with my arms spread like an eagle. Lovely feeling, their eyes are only focused on that 1 empty seat in the car and they try to get passed you like a ball-horney Defensive End. After the beeping starts I decide to let them go and get out myself, yelling 先下后上!

The entire group of exhausted chinarats look at me with a gaze, I could just see the little wheels in their head explode.. message not received

Hey wouldn't it be a great idea for a viral video to have a guy on the Shanghai subway - with a seat, he is sitting down - auctioning off his seat to the highest bidder?

Or a guy renting out little fold out chairs?

This would be a great viral video!

Or just sit on other people's lap in the subway, see how they react.

I was thinking about this one while I was arriving at People's square the other day. Get some kind of glue or sticky stuff, smear it on the rubber black strips on the door just before it closes (1 stop before People's Square) so when the doors open there is a big web of gue and snot . Sit back and see what the rats do

first of all, you'd probably walk through it first, as you like to do - 先下后上!

second of all, you ought to cool it with the "rats" comments. you are precariously close to falling in the same category as prettyndistress with her use of ugly epithets against native philippinos.

First of all bleepingbpleering, As I said sit back and watch... wouldn't really mean that I'd walk through it first right??

Second of all, if you have problems with teh way I speak, I suggest you PM me or call me instead of giving yourself 'face' publicly by trying to correct someone.

i get that some people here feel like they have some inside knowledge due to awareness of the face thing. but really, some are attributing too many behaviors to this concept. it is not the driving force behind everything.

What do they find annoying about Laowai ?

Heh heh. My list :

Coming from a country that astonishingly allows we commoners to email our fearless Prime Minister and get a reply without a 3 a.m. home visit from the men in black.

Voting in a 2 party system at the Consulate. That's a very confronting issue.

Logical thinking and getting things done promptly.

Initiative.

Harvesting the most attractive and intelligent Chinese women before they get the chance.

Getting a driver's licence at 16 and owning a car at 17. That is an annoying big one one strangled by FACE.

Daring to speak my mind.

Oh, yes - speaking English so quickly that it sounds like mumbo jumbo. I give up.

If I was to be a China Basher, I would be much more vociverous. You say. You Judge.

Saw a Chinese couple, woman (girlfriend, I presume) sitting on a guys lap on the train at rush hour. She seemed to be enjoying herself, and of course, they got the attention they were looking for

6'3" and 110kg here and the only way for me to exit a subway is to just barrel my way through as the G'zo and SHG locals swear at me. I especially am amused when old ladies try to pick my pockets. I quickly abandoned Western values towards women and the elderly.

Once someone in my small town was helping NaNa up the stairs to the clinic. She was in a wheelchair and the dutiful daughter and two grown sons were having a heck of a time.

So the three of them grabbed one side of the chair, and I grabbed the other.
