Whenever I see and listen to the candidates for the next American president I think they invariably look like soap opera stars.
They deliver their rehearsed lines with a telegenic smile and look kind of waxy (maybe the TV makeup) on camera. I'm bemused but not moved by any of them.

Even they do not appear to be convinced by their own rhetoric.

Shirley you must give some credit to Herman Cain, Ron Paul, and H. Ross Perot?

You should really start watching the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. The best thing about election season is that the candidates just HAND them so much material.

Although it does make me miss Bush and Perry... *sigh* Those were the greats.

I watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report when I'm in Australia where they run back to back, on national TV and because I lived in the US four years I understand lots of the in humour.
Sadly there seems to be some limitations to what is available on TV in Shanghai.
Maybe I can watch via internet but I'm often too busy posting on here or on Shex's wicked younger cousin.

My preferred candidate is Christopher Walken but I don't think he's running.

Back in 2003, while working stateside I liked Obama and also John McCain, back when he ran for Republican candidate against Bush. McCain should have been the chosen one then but he did not look good against Obama, not his time, later.

To an outsider it all appears a bit plastic fantastic, not real. Australians do not get why Americans appear to be so stirred up and passionate about their preferred candidates, and that in a country where a big percentage of the folk do not bother to vote. In Australia we get less passionate but we have compulsory voting.

No matter how polished (presidential) candidates are they still look like someone's glove puppet, to an outsider.

5 million watched the republiCON debate
while 6.2 million were watching Jersey Shore
and a whopping 18 million were watching American Idol.

lesser of the 3 evil, i should admire people watching american idol.

If you have a VPN, check out this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgyx20W9qY4

It's one of many commercials running on national TV in the US presenting "cool" non-conservative looking people in little mini profiles. At the end of each, they say "My name is _____ and I'm a Mormon."

Here's a screen shot.

Untitled.jpg

I don't know who is behind the commercials, but it looks like Mitt and his friends are trying to shift public perception about Mormons. No mention of "magic underwear", "re-baptism" or plural marriage - none of the "hot buttons" that typically bring knee-jerk reject from people who don't know, and fear, Mormons.

^ Right.

They should change the GOP leadership debates into an episode of that old TV game show - something like "I've got a secret" or something.

"Will the real Mormon please stand up".

Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney here Thursday afternoon in a joint appearance that lasted less than seven minutes and included no questions.

Mr. Romney added, “I’m so honored and pleased to have his endorsement, and of course I’m looking for the endorsement of the people of Nevada.”

Promoting his own success as a businessman, Mr. Romney said: “I spent my life in the private sector. Not quite as successful as this guy, but successful none the less.”

The totals are:

Newt Gingrich 35
Ron Paul 20
Mitt Romney 95
Rick Santorum 34

There are 2286 delegates, and 1144 are needed to win.

States that have a high population of hard line Christians; most of those will vote for Santorum. That's why his results are either feast or famine, and he only scores wins in the center of the country and loses big in the 'big' states like CA, NY, and FL.

Polls now show Mitt's negative "Santorum votes like a free-spending Democrat" campaign is gaining traction. Santorum's senate voting record is his achilles heel.

I still thinks he will win the republican primary (too many delegates in more moderate CA/NY) but for various reasons (including the damage taken in the primary) will still lose the election vs Obama.

santorum has openly admitted he votes to tow the party line, even against his own judgement. the man is a bible-thumping puppet. how the hell is he the runner-up behind romney?

there's only one candidate who thinks for himself, acts accordingly, and has actual plans to bring about real change. not obama (frankly, a disappointment); not romney (smart, but...a fox in the henhouse?!?). it's ron paul. ron paul's achilles heel, however, is his age. plus, most americans are too entrenched in their thinking and what they're used to, so they see ron paul's ideas as eccentric when they're really just bringing us back on track.

the media has fault in this too - completely ignoring paul, as jon stewart poked fun at several times. paying attention only to the big networks, you'd think multiple preemptive wars, quantitative easing (such a silly euphemism if you think about it!), chest-thumping economic promises and ploys, fanciful new tax codes, and trampling women's rights (vilifying planned parenthood) were the popularly accepted norms in the american mindset.

Rick Santorum declares war on pornography: I will ban hardcore fluffy if I’m elected President

"America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography," the former Pennsylvania senator writes. "It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking."

He demands a crackdown on the distribution of hardcore pornography on the Internet, in addition to material on cable/satellite TV, hotel/motel TV, retail shops and through the mail.

“As a Dutch reporter, I have to ask you about something (Rick) said about Holland and euthanasia,” Mouthaan began. “I don’t know if you read about that on the blogs. He stated that people wear bracelets in Holland saying ‘do not euthanize me’ and that people are involuntarily euthanized, do you remember him saying that?”

"Yeah but a lot of these things is a matter of what’s in his heart,” Rick Santorum spokesperson Alice Stewart replied.
