i will be visiting shanghai for a study abroad programme in late may through late july.

i am looking for places to rock out and people to rock out with. i have read in these fora that there is not so much in the alternative music scene here, but surely there must be something to do?

i am not so much into mum, but like godspeed you! black emperor.

i will shake my booty to the faint or erase errata or the rapture or bis or interpol or chicks on speed, and dance like a big dork to the pixies, manic hispanic, the cramps, pink grease and the murder city devils.

i am very excited for the upcoming my bloody valentine boxset.

please point me in the proper direction.

i also, uh, would be interested in guest dj'ing somewhere and playing the aforementioned booty shaking music.

thanks,
pauline

Ha, not a chance! There's nothing like this in Shanghai. My Bloody Valentine has a box set coming out? I must pick that up -- online cause you won't find it here.

pauline, a friend of mine is currently opening a bar and might be interested in my idea of having people "guest dj'ing" once a week ... will let you know , your stuff is not really my style but it is about time the Shanghai crowd is getting to know some alternative and metal ... keep on posting here and i'll let you know what's happening...

Yeah, don't wanna dash your hopes, but the closest you'll get is some *really* bland imitations... Kind of like if someone read a book on punk, while drunk mind you, then made a punk band.

But perhaps there is promise in fiddler's friend... I believe that the trend does exists, but it's not even in its infancy yet. More like first trimester.

Read a book? More like saw 20 seconds on mtv and thought punky! [sic] cool!

Nah, as much as I miss good live music and cutting edge nightclubs, and as much as it sickens me to see young people here thinking Brittany Spears is cool and rebellious -- and gasp! -- remotely attractive, I'm not so eager to see a bunch of expats trying to "create a scene" here. I mean, why do we feel the need to? Can't China's people come up with something themselves, organically? That said, I'll still be a regular at any nightclub or record shop that hosts my kind of 'scene.'

what's wrong with a bunch of expats creating a scene if it works with chinese and non-chinese ?
