Tobacco?

Tobacco?

Postby mthz » Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:40 pm

Hi all...

I'll be the first to admit that I have a terrible, disgusting habit. I chew tobacco. I've been in Shanghai for 3 weeks, and my supply is gone. I'm here for another week, and I'd REALLY appreciate it if anyone knows where I can buy chewing tobacco in Shanghai. I'd prefer Skoal, but at this point, anything would do. Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Try wet bamboo

LOL -- Wet bamboo. Unfortunately that doesn't come with enough fiberglass and nicotine for my liking.

Do you have a phone number for Le Meridien so that I can call and ask? =)

I presume you are from Sweden?

I'm not from Sweden but I'm a big snus fan. But I prefer the bagged version.

I normally get my supply from friends from Sweden that now and then drop by in town.

I haven't seen snus in town yet.

I heard some people say good things about http://www.snusexpress.com.

Good luck.

Chew and snus could not be found in Shanghai as of two months ago. My brother, a real heavy chewer, exhausted his sizable stockpile of chew early into his last visit to Shanghai. He FREAKED OUT—and his withdrawal nearly drove me nuts. After two days of checking the big hotels and local tobacco shops for chew, to no avail, he ordered a box--like 40 cans--of snus from the company HC mentioned. It was shipped express and arrived the following week. He also found US vendor who will ship Kodiak and Skoal.

Note, if the order is shipped via UPS, from Sweden or the US, you will pay a customs tax. If shipped via regular mail, which adds about 7-10 days time, the local post office will not collect the tax—even though they should.

Can somebody explain to me why people LIKE chewing tobacco or more to the point got into it?

I always figured it was sort of a southern hick thing.

I suppose for the same reason some people like sucking hot smoke filled with tar and toxins into their lungs--they tried it, liked it(more likely, got addicted) and continued despite the social disapproval. But unlike smoking, chewing does not produce second hand smoke.

^Indeed. Not at all like US chewing tobacco--no formaldehyde (sp?), fiberglass or other noxious additives--is actually cured with salt, comes in many flavors (the lakrisrot flavor is quite pleasant) and the pre-packed pouches keep everything neat and tidy. Of course, it is still tobacco--evil, right, but still better than smoking.

Can you just chew on cigarettes for the last couple of days in China? Desperate measure for desperate circumstances, i have seen people smoke tea bags for a quick fix.

To respond to the person who asked how I got into chewing tobacco..

First, what I do is actually called "dip" which is slightly different than chewing tobacco. Chewing tobacco looks like Big League Chew -- big long strands of tobacco that you stick in your cheek. Dip, on the other hand, is much finer and is placed between your lower lip and your teeth. It bsaically sits there and you spit for awhile until it loses its flavor.

How'd I get into it? In high school (New Jersey -- not the south), I played soccer and lacrosse. I smoked a bit, and so during soccer/lacrosse season I would trade cigarettes for dip. Fast forward 8 years or so and I still dip because it's much more convenient than smoking a lot of the time (i.e. I can dip in my office or in my hotel room, but I can't smoke!). I just associate long periods of me being by myself (long car rides, airplane rides, watching a movie, etc.) with dipping and it is hard to mentally break those associations to quit. It's a horrible habit, but it's my habit =). People are generally much more disgusted by dip than smoke, for what it's worth.

New Jersey Lacrosse I must second the connection to dipping. Went through the same things.
