some connections to trackers are also blocked as their associated websites are blocked in china. go get a vpn and it will be solved.

Agreed, get a VPN and watch your download speeds dramatically improve for downloading torrents.

For private trackers. Known private trackers often hand out invites through this blog, although you might need to be fast for the better trackers since they are limited invites.

China Unicom has blogspot blocked so you will need a VPN. Dunno about the other isp's.

Probably the best open sign up private tracker = http://www.bitsoup.org (movies, television, games you name it)
British television = http://www.thebox.bz
commonwealth television (excluding UK) = http://www.theempire.bz ( for you aussies!!!)
Asian movies / TV = http://www.asiandvdclub.org

these should be open signup, if they are not just check the sites regularly and you will be in in no time.

the thing with private trackers is that they track your upload and download data. in other words, 1 GB download = 1 GB upload. sharing is caring is their motto.

utorrent for windows
utorrent or transmission for mac
rtorrent for linux

these are probably the best clients for their respective operating systems + they are usually considered "safe" for private trackers, as in not banned client.

utorrent windows settings http://d.pr/QR88 ( for private trackers)
http://www.portforward.com for portforwarding your router.

yay! i'm a geek!

I use a VPN for bit-torrents. My download speed will vary from about 50 kbps to 200 kbps, on cycles of about once every minute. It looks like it's throttling down every minute. Can you explain why this happens, and if there's any work-around to avoid it? I'd obviously like to be working at a continuous 200 kbps. Also, do you consider 200 kbps acceptable speed?

I'm still new to bit-torrents. I've signed up for bitsoup.org and before I start to use it, wonder how it compares to btjunkie? btjunkie seems to work fine in terms of selection, speeds seem slow -- but i don't have any basis to compare this to. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

btjunkie is a public tracker and bitsoup a private tracker. on private trackers people tend to share max upload speed cause they want a good ratio on the site. it will give them a big "e-penis". so in other words stay away from public trackers unless its some rare content that you cant find anywhere.

your problems about the speed could be anything really. from your vpn is slow, router not forwarded correctly, bad torrent with few seeders, your chinese isp messing with you etc etc. judging from your screenshot you are not connectable since i see a red dot instead of a green dot. being connectable just means you are able to connect to all seeders. if you are not connectable there is a chance you wont be able to connect to all seeders than you will have to depend on the router configurations of seeders. so get your router forwarded correctly.

Some things you can do yourself is portforward your router as i explained before and also test it out on a bitsoup torrent that has a lot of seeders like 1000 seeders. if problems still occur you know its on your end. No matter what connection i am on or what country i am in bitsoup popular torrents i would hit max download speed all the time 24/7 ranging from 100mbit NL to 10mbit China 50mbit UK etc download speeds

I got uTorrent3 and I just can't seem to get the hang of it. I'm going back to 2.2.something ...

my bittorrents seem stuck on 99.9%. I am using a wireless router. Does that make any difference?

VLC has never run on my Mac, and neither has QuickTime. I never worried about it because I could always use Miro.

Now Miro won't play any new .avis or XviDs, but it will play old ones. Any thoughts? Their support community seems...limited.
