TP-LINK Router Problem ( TL-WR541G+ )

Postby dincer80 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 1:26 am

We use China Telecom ADSL service. There is a modem which is provided by China Telecom and a wireless router connected to it.

Last week that router suddenly got broken and our landlord provided us another router, the brand is TP-LINK, and the model is TL-WR541G+

I installed this new router to replace the old one. At first (for a couple of hours) everything seemed fine, but the problems started:

* Internet connection started to go offline from time to time with no reason. It keeps offline for a couple of minutes and then comes back. It's the same both for wireless and wired connections..

* Again, from time to time, I got the error `IP Conflict`. Even when there is only 2 devices using the router..

I also tried to reset the router settings and set up from scratch but nothing changed..

So, I suspected of myself. Maybe I am doing something wrong while setting up the router settings.. Maybe some of you guys are using the same router so you can have an idea about what I am doing wrong.

I also attached some of the router setting pages so that we can compare to each others..

Any help would be appreciated..

Hi Kallia,
I couldn't find anything useful on that faq page..

I think my problem is specific to China.. That's why I attached my router settings..

For example, do I need to use PPPoE or Dynamic IP?

How is your router settings?

There are a lot of problems specific to China such as routers. Unless you get a Chinese guy to set this up you are banging your head against the wall. The only recourse is to get a router from OUTSIDE of China with multi-language support. I did that once I was out of China.

When the old router got broken, I first thought the problem is related to Internet connection and called China Telecom (10000).
The sent a service guy in the afternoon of the same (although it was Sunday)
The guy checked the Internet and he was able to get online by only using the modem, so it was obvious that router had a problem..

Anyway, the question is: What if I call China Telecom again and have them send someone over again?
Do you think that guy would check the router settings also?
Or would he just make sure that Internet is OK and say `router is not my job`?

It should be a standard PPPoE set up. There are english manuals for that router out there, you can use them to fight yourself through the menus. I have the same model at home ... it does its job (but barely).
The secret to succes is honesty. If you can fake that, you got it made.

I'll hazard a guess, and say it hasn't got much to do with being a Chinese router...
If you are getting an IP conflict, it sounds like your new router's default IP (perhaps 192.168.1.1) is the same as the ADSL modem that is plugged into the wall and connects into your router?

The problem will be (at least for me) that all the router menus are in Chinese, so troubleshooting it could take some time. A low level local IT nerd should be able to sort it out for you (assuming I am correct - big assumption)

I had the TP Link TD-w89541-G. When I first got it I managed to get it working but the wi-fi signal from it was terrible. And the dam machine always gave me problems.

I recently moved to a new place and promised myself to get a good wi-fi setup in the house. Gave the old TP Link one last try. This time really didnt work, got my Chinese wife to search online forums, called the phone company, had lines reset, modems reset, routers reset, followed every bit of advice.

Still really crap. Promised myself never to buy TP-Link in the future as this one has given me too many wasted hours.
So I've thrown it away and got a different brand which seems to work ok.
Not much help but try save yourself the time and exchange for a different brand. Gave me too much wasted time.

Okay was worth a shot – only just came across the site recently – months after I’d had similar problem with TP-Link (different model) to you a few months ago.

Have you tried connecting an Ethernet cable from router to computer to check port settings and verify your computer is actually communicating with the router?

Reset your router back to factory default – then rebooted it?

Temporarily disabled firewall?

Updated your drivers?

Tried disabling Wireless Zero Configuration services? (this just disables 802.1X authentication which sometimes interrupts connectivity)

Checked Internet Explorer settings? (None of the boxes in the LAN settings should be checked for instance)

Someone mentioned an IP conflict - you could try changing the last number of the string (192.168.1.1 -
192.168.1.2) and see if that works.

TPLinks are usually pretty good hardware wise imho, although this one is quite a low end model.
From the look of it though, its the ADSL side thats an issue, not the router.

When you lose connectivity, check the ADSL modem DSL light - is that flashing?
If so, its not the router.., and you need to explain to the Shanghai Telecom guy that comes to check the ADSL modem logs to see the signal level, and signal loss details.

I'd also get another router, this one is a cheap G router, and you can buy an N router for < 150rmb these days that supports OPEN/DD-WRT/ Tomato firmware, and supports english.

If you are going to stick with this one, turn on unpnp in the settings. That will help with torrents and other software that needs unpnp set to active.
