TRAIN TO BEIJIN

Postby ALESSANDRO » Thu Mar 25, 2004 5:33 pm

I've noticed there are trains from Shanghai to Beijing and Hong Kong and was wondering how is the service and where I can find more info about it.
I am quite scared of flying so I rather get a train to go around China.
Many thanks.

There are overnight trains from Sh to Bj called k13,k14 (run by Shanghai railway), k21,k22 (run by Bj railway), usually takes 14 hrs as far as I remember, maybe shorter now. They are the best and fastest trains from sh to bj and services are quite good. Hard sleeper costs around 320yuan. You can find detailed info about train to HK online by using google. Usually you can go to some travel agencies where the staff speak English and they will book the ticket for you and charge you a small amount of fee.

If you can read chinese or know someone who can, go to

http://www.tielu.org/

It's a pretty updated schedule of trains within China.

There are about 4 different ways of looking for trains (city-to-city, all trains from one city, by train number or name, and by province, i think).

hopefully this will help you.

And another note:

To buy tickets for the train to HK, if for some reason you don't go through a travel agent, you need to go to a hotel located a short walk west of Shanghai Railway Station. They don't sell these tickets in the station itself. I think the hotel is called the Long Men Hotel (龍門兵官)。 There is a small ticket office somewhere in the hotel foyer.

The train to HK is much the same type of train as the one to Beijing. However, the passengers tend to be a smarter crowd (i.e. HK students etc. rather than chainsmoking peasants from Christ knows where).

From memory, tickets down to HK are something like RMB600 for a hard sleeper. Roughly half the cost of flying.

Take some food with you, because the food on board is not the greatest. Hot water is available, so instant noodles or something is a good idea.

Chinese trains here can be fun if you are in the mood. Usually only one or two other foreigners on board (if that), so people will be curious and want to chat. The time can fly past if you are feeling social. Of couse if you just want to read a book it can be a pain in the arse listening to people discussing the size of your nose, the likely price of your clothes, and this prostitute from Harbin who slept with two Russian guys on an overnight train journey and was found dead in her berth in the morning. The story went that two 'laowai' were just too much for her to handle in a night, and she died from 'internal injuries'. Hmm. . . the things one learns on trains, eh?

Should I bring a sleeping bag or sleep sack for the overnight Beijing-Shanghai train?
Should I book the tickets in advance thru a travel agent?

No need to bring your sleeping bag. Might need ear plugs if you're sensitive to noise. Overall a good experience. Clean trains. Shanghai- Beijing takes now 12 hours.
Better to book your ticket 3 days in advance to avoid the crowd.
Prices varies depending if you choose the bottom bed, the middle one or the top one. The most expensive being the bottom one.

My experience with Chinese trains = wads of kleenex stuck up my nostrils to keep me from being intoxicated by that refreshing scent of foot odor.

the best choice is Z14, formerly known as K14, run by shanghai railway. it departs at 19:00 and arrives in bj at 7 in the morning. It's neat and clean. Z22 is not as clean as Z14.
