UK Settlement Visa for Chinese wife

Just like it says.. a forum for discussion of these things.

UK Settlement Visa for Chinese wife

Postby me2 » Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:49 am

I am a British National and recently got married to my now Chinese wife. We are hoping to move to the UK and so we have been trying to organize the necessary documents for her to apply for a Settlement visa. I'm looking on the British Embassy website:

http://www.uk.cn/bj/visa_index.asp?Lang ... artid=1186

But I am not sure what some things are that have been stated:

* Family book
* From 1st July every deposit slip must be accompanied by a deposit certificate.

Can anyone tell me what these two things are? Also, does anyone know if after obtaining the Settlement VISA, my wife would be eligible to work in the UK?

thanks.

The family book will be kept in her hometown and contains the birth details of the members of the family.

The deposit certificate is the printed sheet that the bank issues when you deposit money. It's printed on the computer, you sign it and they issue you with the tear off section. The deposit slip is the hand written version that we would normally do ourselves in the UK before handing over the money to the bank teller. As far as i am aware you can get deposit certificates printed again if required.

On a settlement visa she can work and get NHS treatment but she will not be eligible for DSS benefits.

All the questions lead to one thing; will you be self sufficient on your return to the UK? If you can provide evidence of savings, a place to live and some guaranteed means of supporting yourselves in the future then they will have no problems with the application. The UK operates on a very black and white basis unlike other embassies that allow their staff to operate within gray areas and make decisions off their own back. With the UK Embassy, if all the paperwork is correct then the decision is based on that.

And one last thing, don't lie about anything, it usually invalidates any right of appeal.

Thanks GC. The question of being "will you be self sufficient on your return to the UK?" is totally what I thought when reading the website. I will be getting a family member to sponsor her actually as I will be going to do research at a university which will not not be the richest of people.
