Up-converting DVD Player

Postby Missin'_Miami » Sun Nov 11, 2007 9:23 pm

Anyone recommend a dvd player that would upconvert a regular dvd movie you would buy in a store to High-Definition? I've seen them listed in the US, but haven't been able to "test-drive" them in the store yet. Not sure how good the conversion is.

Thanks!

The real question is does the dvd player or your television do the better job of upconverting a 480p signal to a 720p/1080i/p signal.

Also note, if you're not already aware, that upconverting 480 to 1080 neither increases the quality of the picture not changes it to a true HD signal. It is a process of expanding 480 lines of information into 720 or 1080 lines.

Upconverting in the DVD player is a 100% digital process, so technically it is the purest way to do it which has the capability to be the highest quality way to do it, but to see the difference you'd have to be a real videophile.

Look on www.avsforum.com for recommendations. The last time I looked, Samsung DVD players did a very good job at a very reasonable price.

Thanks CoffeeHawk_0! Was doing a google search and found some reviews, with the Samsung getting a decent review. Also came across some review for the Oppo DV-981HD which got a raving review from users, and some videophile reviewers as well. All say the Oppo upconverts to 1080p very nicely...could be the best one out there. Downside is the unit is US$229...and it seems that I can purchase it in the US, and possible Hong Kong. Upside is, its a universal DVD player so I can play discs from any region....and it has a 110-220V power supply so that means I can play it here in China without any converter.

I'd be willing to pay US$229 since I just got a 46" Samsung N8 HD LCD TV, and they used a Phillips HDMI HDTV DVD player with upconverting capabilities...but I wasn't all impressed with the result of the upconvert. At best, it looked like regular cable tv on a HD TV (I have very little reference to HD DVD).

But I will also check out the avs forum to get more opinions and reviews before I make the plunge. Thanks again CoffeeHawk!
