Very much a grudge match

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Big Bamboo for the Liverpool Chelsea game at midnight, expecting a big raucous crowd with lots of partisan abuse flying around.

I watched it with the bar manager, a very nice Kiwi, but he was actually working, so I actually watched most of it on my own. We lost and there wasn't even anyone to rub my face in it. Just a rainy Shanghai night at 2am on a Monday morning without a cab in sight.

I can't believe there isn't a big posse of people watching matches like this somewhere in SH - this Saturday it's ManU Liverpool in the FA Cup and I was wondering where I would find a fun crowd?

I guess the fact that lots of people were out of town because Chinese New Year might have had something to do with it. It was quiet in most places.

Usually you will get quite a lot of people in O'Malley's, certainly for the big teams. The rugby is really big there though with maybe 200 people watching so check the schedule as the rugby gets priority during the 6 nations.

O'Malley's will be manic when it comes to the World Cup.

And if you want to see how the game should be played I believe that the West Ham match will be on in the British Bulldog tomorrow but I need to check.

I don't know if you've seen Harry Redknapp's recent wit and wisdom

John Viafara, Portsmouth (£1.5m from Once Caldas)
"With 10 minutes to go I bring on a boy (Viafara) and tell him to mark the near post space at a corner because it's a vital position. He runs on and goes somewhere else because he doesn't speak a word of English."

So said Harry Redknapp of the Colombian midfielder who had spent five months in England without learning the phrase 'mark the near post'. That was pretty much the end of Viafara's wonderful Portsmouth career and he has since gone on loan to Real Sociedad where, of course, he is brilliant.

I believe Liverpool v Manchester United is being shown at the British Bulldog Pub tomorrow night at 20.25. There were quite a few people in there last time we went to watch a match. We'll probably be going along.

Yes that's true. It will be a good warm up for the real match that is on at 11...... :)

That's a good one. I saw another where he was being interviewed on TV and one of his players kicked a ball near him. While he was still being filmed he turned round and gave a mouthfull to the player. The interviewer asked him the same question again and Harry ignored the questions and turned round to face the same player again and said (on TV) "No wonder he's in the f*cking reserves".

I like him - even though his loyalty is questionable
