China’s new social security law requires expats in Shanghai to begin paying into the social insurance system starting from October 15.
Was that news? Seems there was almost zero coverage of it.

Here's a story: "So far, how many expats and their firms have been duped into paying this ridiculous tax?" I'm guessing approximately 0.0%

ATTENTION:

In December, the city’s major English news media, Shanghai Live of ICS and Shanghai Daily joined hands for an expat-oriented program that aimed to pick out what the community thought was the top ten news stories in town in 2011. The two news organizations collected questionnaires from hundreds of expats, who helped picked out their choices among the 20 candidates. Their top choices included the launch of Shanghai-Beijing high-speed train, ground-breaking of Shanghai Disneyland, as well as items like Yao Ming’s retirement and the city’s tainted bun scandal. Shanghai Live announced the results on a special program on December 31st together with interviews and comments from the local expat community, while Shanghai Daily had a report on the expats’ picks. Now we are inviting participants to come to the party at Shanghai New World Department Store on Central Huaihai Road. There will be opportunities for audience discussions of English news in Shanghai, as well as lucky draws for attendees. Please RSVP to this event by sending your name and email address to: editor@shanghaiexpat.com and shanghailive@ics.smg.cn.
