Here's a book recommendation:

The New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler

It's the most no-nonsense fitness training book I've ever read (and I've read hundreds of them). There is a lot of misinformation about fitness being sold to the public these days- this book is a good tool to quickly educate you about what works and what doesn't in terms of exercise.

It is not physiologically possible for the human body to mobilise more than about 0.5kg of fat per week.

Rapid weight loss in the first phase of a diet is invariably due to dehydration.

After this, if you continue to loss weight rapidly, it is coming off your muscle mass. Your body will also mobilise liver glycogen stores, leading to an overload of ketone bodies in the bloodstream which will eventually be detectable on your breath as a sickly-sweet smell. Anorexics smell like this. Prolonged ketosis will eventually leading to a decompensating acidosis which does further damage to your organs.

Needless to say, all of this is the exact opposite of what you should be trying to achieve.

My weight loss tip: eat less, you need to switch off your hunger gene by desensitising it.

If you find hard to lose weight you may need to have your thyroid function checked.

No, it's much more straightforward than that. You simply give me your credit card details. That's it.

exercise, reduce portions, limit carbs (bread, rice, pasta, etc), increase fruits and veggies, maintain healthy protein levels. if really motivated, eliminate or reduce alcohol. there are tons and tons of diets out there - the secret is to make lifestyle changes that will enable you to maintain the weight you want to be. craze or fad diets may work for some, but many are not safe and often the weight is gained back once the diet is no longer followed.

i have a fairly simple strategy for weight loss - reduce calories and increase physical activity. while doctors may not agree, if i want to eat chocolate for dinner instead of a salad and piece of grilled chicken - i eat the chocolate. the calories are the same (goes back to portion control) and i have not depraved myself of anything. stay away from weight loss pills as they are not healthy and can cause too much strain on your heart.

stress also makes me lose weight. for some it is the opposite - when they are stressed, they eat. when i am stressed, i can't fathom the idea of food. but then i usually wind up in the opposite position - trying to gain back the weight i lost.

If you aren’t happy with the weight you’ve gained during your pregnancy, don’t worry. You can lose that weight quickly and easily as long as you know what to do. You may think that you don’t have time to work out because your baby is at a stage where it needs its mother as often as possible. However, your baby likely naps often. If you get into the habit of getting your workouts in whenever your baby is napping, you’ll soon see drastic results. Here are three exercises you can do during that nap time that will supercharge your day and leave you feeling and looking your best.
This exercise is perfect for women who just had a baby because not only will it help you lose weight, but it will strengthen your back, abs and overall core, which will help your posture and increase your metabolism at the same time. To do this exercise, get down on all fours with your hands right under your shoulders. Then, pull your abs in and make sure your neck remains in line with your spine. Breathe in through your nose while keeping your back straight and then breathe out while pulling your navel up and in without moving your spine. Do this twelve times and repeat for three sets to get a good abdominal and core workout. Arm Flutters: This is a great post-natal exercise that can be completed right next to your baby’s crib. Simply lie down flat on your back while your legs are straight in the air. Now, pick your torso slightly off the ground and lift your arms while keeping them straight. Slowly lower back down and completely for 20-50 times. This will make your core strong, which means you’ll be burning more calories. That baby weight is sure to come off in record time as long as you do this exercise at least three times per week.

Joshaliya87 wrote:Here are 10 no-nonsense tips for fast, healthy weight loss :
1) Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day - this helps flush your body of impurities and fat. You can also substitute a few glasses of water for green or herbal tea.
4) Decrease your fat intake - try for no more than 20 grams per day.
7) Don’t eat that late night snack - Try not to eat for at least 2 hours before going to bed.

8-10 glasses of water? you are not wrong, but sounds like "drink 2l a day" like you can read it in every magazine at your hairdresser
20g fat a day? that's just for the weight-loss-period, right? the recommendation of daily fat intake is up to 70g (fat soluble vitamins!), depending on your job...
stop that late night crap. if you eát 2 bigmacs and drink a large coke at 10pm, but the rest of the day you only drink water, you will still loose weight.
input calories < calorie consumption = weight loss. that's it.

useless random fact:
the basic metabolic rate is 1kcal per hour per kg body weight, so you just have to multiply our weight by 24, and you get the calories, you burn by doing absolutely nothing.
70kg*24=1680.

Re: Weight loss tips

Postby Stark » Tue Nov 29, 2011 2:50 pm

I injured my back last year and have had to drastically cut back on my exercising (I use to exercise 5 times a week, 2-3 times fairly intensely). Now I get out once a week and I don't run nearly as hard as I did before my mishap. Yet I've been surprised to find that I've lost 2-3 kilos - and not all of it is muscle, as my pants are a bit looser and others have commented that I look trimmer. So what was it?

I think it's because over the last year I've been eating a lot less western food in Shanghai. For my first few years here I almost always ordered an Element sandwich or some other Sherpa's dinner from a western place - over the past year I've discovered that I can eat locally around my apartment for about 1/8 the price (Gil Wonton I love you), and it doesn't seem nearly as fattening.

So my opinion if you want to lose weight - stop eating non-Asian foods 6 times a week. Avoid processed carbs like white bread and white rice (when I order Chinese food I get like a half order of rice, or make my own brown rice in my apartment). Avoid sugary drinks. My at-home evening drink used to be run and coke - delicious, but fattening. I switched to vodka and coke 0. God only knows what's in coke 0, as it's delicious, but at least it's not making me fat. Or maybe the terrible chemicals are disintegrating my bone mass which balances out the weight gain. Dunno. All I know is that I passed 30 and started losing weight without spending hours on the treadmill.

Drinking green tea every night is best for weight lose. Running about 1 miles every day also burns extra fat.Dieting is also option but its not good.

Drinking highly caffeinated drinks at night will often result in insomnia hence leading to a poor night's sleep which in turn means you miss the alarm clock that rang early to get you up to go for that 1 mile run.

A quick google search will reveal the dangers of fat burning pills.

Losing fat without "quick fixes" is not only beneficial to your health but to your own mental strength and determination to achieve what you once thought may have been impossible.

Give it a try sometime.

I packed on a bit of weight over Chinese New Year, but since then I've walked home from work each evening, 1 hour and 20 minutes, and only eaten 2 meals each day, and nothing after 7pm. Drinking more water and drank less booze. Lost about 3 kilos in the last 2 weeks now.

exercise-wise it has to be cardio for fat loss - you wouldn't use a sledgehammer to crack a nut - right tool for the right job - trouble is cardio will ultimately ruin your posture so to keep it going long term you need to address this too...
check out some reasons why in my articles here...
