Currently reading "Lolitta" atm. For those who dont know, its about a paedo and a young girl called (you guessed it ) Lolitta.

I think this book is hilarious at times when the main character Humbert goes through his thought process. It is slighty disturbing and at the same time not. Extremely well written, you fall in love with the way he writes and describes feelings, situations etc...

Reading my way through all the Patrick O Brian novels. These were the books Master & Commander were based on.

Also reading Das Boot, the real story behind the movie about a WWII German submarine patrol.

"The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai. It's the kind of book you want to read slowly to savor. I just learned that she is booked to speak at the Shanghai Lit. festival in March.

"Freakonomics" is one. Not a bad read, and "Contrarian Investment Strategies" is another. Don't read this book if you actually have a life.

They definitely have Wild Swans at the Foreign Language Bookstore on Fuzhou Lu across from the Shanghai Book Town

Recommend: Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, by Robert Putnam
-Ever want to get all pumped up about civic activity? This is book for you comrad.

Reading: Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill
-Ever want to get all pumped up about turning your thoughts into riches? Well that's what this crazy book is about. "The Inspirational Classic"

Noway you'll ever be able to find either of these puppies in China

I just got all the Phillip K. Dick novels while on Christmas break. Working my way through "Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep." Yes I am a nerd of the highest order.

What is Wild Swans about? Sounds suspiciously like one of those "Uplifting stories of old China told through the eyes of four generations of Chinese women" estrogen fests.

Thats what I thought before I read it , but it's a pretty open and honest perspective on China from the early 1900's to around 1980 - written by a chinese woman who talks through her families ordeals through the rise of communism - and mainly the cultural revolution . The author lives in London now so is pretty candid about what went on . It's well worth reading and it highlights the unbelievable cruelty and childish , but devastating policies Mao etc put in place to control the masses . I should be a book critic ......

Hmmm.... Maybe I'll give it a try, but I don't know - I've read this book like 5 times already by different authors. Cultural Revolution horror stories are the new fluffy in Shanghai.

My sister got me the first flashman book for crimbo and I polished it off within a couple of days.Good stuff. Do you know if they're available in China?

Just finished Mr China too, can't remember the author. Good insight into potential problems setting up a JV in China.

I haven't seen them anywhere in China but it might be possible to find them in Hiong Kong. They are brilliant aren't they? And the history is spot on.

I have never read the first one so I could do a swap with you if you like?
