what do you think of "China's leftover women"?

I read this article today and wonder about your opinion.

Though I don't think the gov has done a lot behind this... it has more to do with people's traditional concept and cultures non?

If you're dating a Chinese girl who falls into a "left-0ver" age range, does she feel pressure or she's ok with it ? Or perhaps girls who are willing to go out with Westerners have learnt to ignore the discrimination from society?

I think it's ridiculous. Only irrational social pressure can maintain such a moronic fiction.

There's nothing "left over" about these women except that they fall for it. And yes, they feel the pressure.

I didn't realize until I read the article at your link that the government had any role in this.

In my opinion, it's not so much about the gov's conspiracy or something, but more like a deep rooted fear and insecurity inflicted by the society, felt by Chinese women that they would not be appreciated once they pass the golden age of childbearing (in China it's under 30! ).

One thing interesting is one comment says those women are regarded as "mentally and physically sick", if you live in a traditional Chinese community it might be hard to turn away from those who wonder if you're "sick". Your relatives will probably rush you cos they're afraid of being a relative of a "sick" woman, the gossip and rumors from their neighbors.

Hmm... it's hard to be a Chinese woman.

In the US, at 34 women are considered to be "advanced maternal age" but that's a result of the potential for issues during pregnancy, like birth defects...but anyway, I don't get it though, there are a lot of hot 30+ Chinese girls out there that are single and a lot of single Chinese men still living at home that have no girlfriend. If I have to choose between getting nothing and banging a lady in her mid to late 30's, well I am gonna get it in.
Amanda? Come on, dude. I mean, that's probably not even her real name.

Moronic - much like many of the prehistoric cultural practices here that are claimed as good traditional Chinese virtues.

Maybe it's time to leave the Tang Dynasty behind and enter the 21st century...

that's the problem... those guys are not attractive enough for those hot 30 something ladies to have any desire to bang...What's sad is that they don't think there is anything wrong with them. They think it's the women who are being picky...

^So how do you suggest those guys can change the way they look?

In general, for Asians, women are simply more physically attractive then men.

The leftover women think the leftover guys are too ugly, the leftover men think the leftover women are too old. Seems like pickiness on both sides, really.

That said, the age discrimination towards Chinese women is indeed stupid.

Agreed. But i don't think it's totally about physical appearance, it has something to do with the way they carry themselves, lifestyle, habit, personality etc... they probably need to get rid of their Napoleon Complex too. With a bit gym work and dressing they could look good.
I have some Western girlfriends with Asian husbands, those guys aren't particular handsome, just average-looking, but they grow up outside of mainland so they act and behave differently. The change has to come from within.

^ What Caso said, especially so with women who are raised in a society that shelters them, where they still live with their parents, wear "hello kitty" pyjamas, and buy "hello kitty" cases for their iPhones when they're 25. Women are boring until they start to figure out who they are and what THEY want in their lives. In China, that doesn't seem to happen until they're in their 30s, but of course there are exceptions.

what's your point here?

"left over" is a WRONG word, with the assumption that everybody should get married at certain age, but it's not true. Marriage is an option, not a must. Without this assumption, the term shall not exist at all. In civilized country women are not called "left over".

Divorce rate is a certain sign of progress, in my opinion. People have the right to pursue happiness, marriage shall not stop them from doing so.

Interesting, I read it somewhere that some Chinese men prefer those "boring" types as they are intimidated by a mature woman who speaks for herself and has opinion. It's not easy to "control". The author said that their taste for women is too childish, and they need to grow up.

I've never seen a country with such a big problem with "left behind" women as China.

Women who are 25 and unmarried think their "best before date" has been passed, and they have to marry the guy they're with NOW, no matter how unsuitable he may be.

Bob, I just don't see that in any great numbers in developed countries. This "left behind" idea can only exist in a country in which women are treated as second-class citizens, and valued only for their bodies, and not their minds. It's very oppressive and demeaning. I think it's a major reason why so many young Chinese women never develop their minds, or perhaps just pretend to be stupid. It's like America in the 1950s.

The imbalance in gender in China's population is given as 109 boys to 100 girls or sometimes as high as 120 to 100.

That's too general. When you look deeper you can play with the numbers.

It is a gender imbalance. Only 20% are rich. So that means 20 rich boys to 100 girls. And rich boys are the girls' choice so no wonder they get left over. Only 20% of these girls will get satisfied while 80% can only fantasize their princess syndrome wishes.

But then the ratio odds even out when rich men of all ages are up against only single women aged 20 to 30. About 1/5 of them are young girls so that's 20%. So now its even scale of 20:20 for rich men vs young girls! ITS EVEN!!!!!! NO MORE IMBALANCE!!!!

Dear friend
I think you have made mistake for me, the leftover women in China, they are not second level people, opposite some of them are higher status people, I have meet some of them, they are beautiful, they was born rich or power family, why they become leftover women, some of them are devote in career, they work hard and become important leader in goverment or state company, so they could find man adapt their status. you know it is meaning most of ordinary man could not match them, so rabbit you have misunderstand me at all.
