What happened to the night life in Shanghai?

Postby Flightless » Fri Jun 25, 2004 10:11 am

I left Shanghai last Nov. Having lived here 2 and a half years and watched the nightlife grow, and to some extents get really wild (IE Halloween on Mao Ming Lu) I went on tour in South East Asia and returned a couple of weeks ago to find Mao Ming Lu quiet and even JuLuLu empty! I mean it's as if a cold and evil wind blew into town and took away all the fun? Or has it moved. I asked Judy what was going on, she told me there was too much noise. I heard some American diplomat got attacked and beaten up by a large bunch of Chinese in front of M Factory....but even so, what the F*** Happened? Or has it all moved to another local? I work at night in Xintiandi, and I can tell you, Xintiandi is cashing in on this. Just because I work there doesn't mean I want to hang there, I prefer the seedier side of things, so where to now? Is this a temperary thing like during APEC? Where are all the Shanghai Party Girls? (Ok hookers and such but I prefer to give them some face) It's almost depressing!

flightless - this has been discussed to death in the last month. Have a check on the past forums - latest rumour I heard is that Saturday night the police are going to start relaxing the crackdown. Don't know how reliable the info is, but probably as much as some of the other c**p written about this.

Heard they want to develop Maoming lu corners and therefor cleaning the surroundings first. Know also that some of the joints are planning a move.

On the other hand, this may be temporary as it has been years before. Some two years ago, they put some pressure on Julu lu joints, and after a month or two things were back to normal. Last year the same thing happened in other parts. Who knows! Don't think the party has stopped, just moved somewhere... but where ? Maybe Tongren lu joints .

Thanks, I hadn't seen the older posts, I only joined this site today. I wish I had joined earlier! I just hope this doesn't become a trend or extend to other areas. I miss my old haunts and vices......

Staying hopeful in Shanghai! -Flightless
