What is a Hair Trim??

Postby Adrienne » Mon Oct 13, 2008 2:09 am

I have what is considered one of the easiest hair styles to maintain. A good trim and fringe will keep me a very happy girl for months. Usually I go to good hairdresrs and am happy. But, occasionaly, I think "I just I want a trim" and wander across the road for a 20RMB trim. I explain that I just want a '"straight/flat trim" very simple, no hassle. BUT it seems to me that every budding hairdresser just seems to ache to do something with your hair. So, "a 2 inch trim" ends up with some young dudes idea of a new style.

I've just had the above done to me and don't want to front the world for at least four weeks. So, I advocate any good hairdresser in town that is not LOCAL.

Yeah, but the young dudes are cute :)

Seriously though, I do the same. Serious hair work I go to Reborn in Dagu Lu but for a quick in between trim I am impressed with Salon 88 at all the Carrefour stores. It's 59RMB for a senior stylist for a cut, wash, blow dry and they are pretty consistent with their work.

I just went to Salon 88 at Gubei Carrefour yesterday for ONLY a trim. i speak a lil bit of chinese so i told the hair-stylist to just give me a trim and guess what i have for the 2nd time ended up in the same situation as Adrienne. Am sooooo annoyed right now! the chinese stylists seem to think straight hair is the ONLY way to style your hair. it feels like yearss since i've had a decent hair-cut!! i am NEVERRRR going to cut my hair ever in china again!!!!! Sighhh!

Duh! But anyways now that i have calmed down just a lil abt the whole thing - i think my hair can still pass off as a "decent hair-cut" from the front..its just that from behind it looks a lil weird. oh well i just need to be patient for a couple of more months and think abt going to eric's the next time i reallyy think i need a hair-cut..from what i see eric's seem to be highly recommended place for hair cuts.

instead of one 2" trim every 3 months, for 20rmb a pop, live a little and get 2/3" trimmed every month.

I never go to a barber whom I don't know...it is just too risky.

I've gotten my hair cut three times at WengFen (sp?) for RMB 20. It includes a shampoo/awesome head massage. I actually think they do a better job than many of the places I would go back home that cost $20-$30. I believe the clipper guard they use (in the States at least) is a cruch. Here it's all freehand, baby. I actually had the thought that guys are much easier to please when it comes to hair cuts than girls while I was getting the trim.

@ Havard....

Correct !

So much easier being a man here - Beard trim, haircut, neck buzzcut, wash and hot air dry ( not "blow job" ) is 8 kuai, 4 kuai if I slither down to Mr. Wang at the University if I could be bothered.

They know me + what I'm there for, and the boss spells it out loud and clear to the new barber(s) attending. No "upstairs" BTW.

A regular repeat client is a satisified client.

Don't start.

First bad experience. Went to a local place, opened recently near my place, for a trim and used hand gestures to explain what i want. The guy took an electric shaver and before i could say anything proceeds to simply wipe out the complete hairline. Was looking like somebody kept a bowl on my head and shaved around it.
Was pissed offcourse but told him to simply shave off the whole head. Here's the kicker: the guy actually was admiring his "Pièce de résistance", was visibly distressed at my request and left. A few minutes later another guy comes and asks why i want to ruin the "nice hairstyle" his colleague just gave me.
Snatched the shaver from his hand and did it myself. Was leaving when the guy asked me for 50RMB. The price was clearly written on the wall: 25RMB for a haircut. You know why? B'coz according to their logic i had just gotten 2 haircuts.

Reborn on Dagu is pretty good. At least my husband, who is super picky, likes it. I haven't cut my hair in over a 6 months! I can get better and cheaper haircuts in the US.

Michael or Damon at Reborn are the stylists who have cut our hair.

I've been to 3 WengFen locations 4 times total - the quality of the cut very much depends on the person and maybe the location. The one on Jiangsu Lu near the subway stop - everthing excellent, fair prices too (had many services done there). The one on Shimen 2 Lu, great wash and head massage, twice the worst haircuts I ever had in Shanghai, one was 20 rmb, one was 60 rmb - complete crap.

Adrienne, I sympathise with you! I haven't been to a western stylist here, but the local ones I've been to, completely ignored what I asked for, and even with a Chinese friend translating what I wanted (to make sure there were no misunderstandings), I still didn't get what I wanted.

At one particular salon, after another western friend and I didn't get what we had asked for, I asked my Chinese friend to find out whether the stylist had ever cut western hair before, to which he replied, of course! Then, he told her that he didn't understand what the fuss was all about, and why western woman couldn't just be like their other customers, where the stylist does what they want!

Where are the good hairdressers in Shanghai, or aren't there any? I realise that Asian and western hair differ, but surely there must be people who are trained to cut western hair correctly? Where are they?

Adrienne, try John´s Salon at Beixing Xi Lu (just behind Portman). Ask for Rainbow, she speaks English and is quite good.
