What is the best place to find cheese?

Postby progolferyo » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:44 am

I have noticed that at the common supermarkets that I go to, Carrefour, Hymall, Tesco, they have very little cheese. If they do have cheese, it is in very little quantities, always imported, and extremely expensive.

I have also been to Metro and they do have a pretty substantial cheese section, even in huge industrial quantities. But still, the prices are outrageous. (sometimes twice as much as in the U.S.)

So what I do not understand is:

There are loads of restaurants in Shanghai that sell items with loads of cheese for pretty inexpensive prices. Babela's (and other restaurants like it) is a good example. The prices are very reasonable and the quantities of cheese are pretty big. So where do they buy their cheese from? It cant be as expensive as Metro.... (Do they just buy in extremely large quantities?)

Almost any good cheese is imported.. and if its imported that means its expensive. The local dairies are just not into the cheese business. Its not a key part of the local diet. What they make is China, to me, is not even close to the real thing. What they primarily make in China - in the US they have to call "processed cheese food" and cannot even call it real cheese.

I have also heard that the way they raise the cows here and what they feed them, does not work well for good cheese. One rumor is that they use antibiotics in the cows, so the milk has antibiotics in them which do not allow the cheese cultures to do their job.

I once picked up deal on Tillmook at Parksons. Apparently one of their buyer got a one time deal on a boat load that was ready expire ( use by date) and they were selling it cheap ( 6RMb for 200g brick) . It was all gone in week and have not seen it there since.

Where restaurants get their cheese is another issue. I am sure there are distributors that bring it in.. and maybe they are using some of the local brands ( which I do not consider good cheese) . Where and for what price.. I do not know. Probably the best deal to be had is through Metro. Or ask the restaurants if you can buy from them.

I use to buy it at Metro, the Emmenthal or Gouda big block, and sometimes they have Mussarella also.
The difference between Metro and Carrefour: for the same cheese, Metro is about rmb72/kg and Carrefour is around rmb120

another place from where you can buy cheese: ALPI cheese factory. The owner is an italian guy, and the cheese and salamis are quite good!
and, of course, cheaper than any supermarket. they also deliver if you buy around 5 kg.
If you like Peccorino cheese and fresh sausages, this is the place!

i purchased alpi "fresh" mozzerella balls yesterday for the first time. horrible. had a major chemical aftertaste. think it might have been something they put in the "milk type water."

i've found carrefour and metro have same brand of bulk cheese. not quality.

will have to check out gourmet dicasa - if you have address could you post it?

I just arrived from my holidays, so hadn't time to find their mobile or email, but I have one receipt with me:
It in Jiading district, Malu town, phone: 59104189, fax: 59100475
I'm not sure if they increase their prices or not, but for mozzarella/fila pizza was 60rmb/kg; ricota rmb90/kg, provola rmb150 for 400gr; pecorino is one piece with 5 kg rmb130/kg; fresh sausages rmb75/kg (the same that Metro and Pines has and is double the price there).
for salamis, you can just buy some samples at Metro first, to see if you like it, but cheese Metro doesn't have it.
those I listed are the ones I already bought and know its good.

Has anyone seen cream cheese anywhere recently? It disappeared from Carrefour, City, Pines and Metro before Christmas and has yet to return. I want to make a carrot cake for my college daughter who is visiting and need the cream cheese for frosting!

Hi there, I usually buy cheese in a very good on-line shop that sell Italian cheeses, pasta and also ham.
The problem was that they sell a big quantity (for exemple gorgonzola Kg 1.5 or 12 pieces of Buffalo Mozzarella) so I asked to my friends if they wanted to share those quantities and now we are a lot of people to share cheeses and pasta or gnocchi.
The link for this on line shop is:
http://www.vivishanghai.com/bottega1/index.php
they will deliver your shopping at your home!
If you want to join our group you can contact me, but I don't deliver
Some examples if you'll share with us:

Mozzarella di bufala Granarolo gr. 125/Rmb 40

Mozzarella di bufala Pettinicchio gr. 200/Rmb 63

Gorgonzola Granarolo
gr.500/Rmb 95

Parmigiano Unigrana gr. 200/Rmb 105

Ricotta fresca di mucca Granarolo gr. 250/Rmb 43

Stracchino Granarolo (also named Certosa cheese) gr. 100/Rmb 25

Ciao!

We buy Alpi mozzarella from time to time at City Shop. But the taste is really not good, it's only edible when you melt it. So no tomato-mozzarella-basil plate :(
Bad quality and really expensive.

Is the shop on Yongfu Lu still there?

Although, not very much, but it is real nonetheless! PureDay 200g Mild Cheddar 32rmb or 200g Mozzarella 27rmb!
All the supermarkets stock processed cheese slices... yuck!:

We've bought it from Freshmart in Jing'an Temple and Carrefour in Zhongshan Park but there are definitely some specialty shops around. Have you checked out Delish (98 Yanping Lu near Xinzha Lu) or Cheese & Fizz in Xintiandi at 119 Madang Lu?

“Fields”, the latest addition to Shanghai’s community of online food purveyor’s, also has fairly broad selection of quality cheeses.
