Pan-Asian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Manila (May 2-3, 2009)

Seven members of the SHBJJ team competed in the Pan Asian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Manila on the 2-3 May and finished up with 3 Gold and 6 Bronze medals.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Originating from traditional jiu-jitsu and developed in Brazil, BJJ is based on the principle that a smaller and weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger and stronger assailant.

It is a martial-art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting; where the application of leverage and body mechanics are used to control and dominate the opponent.

Three main philosophies:

1. Promote Physical Fitness
2. Building Character and Self-Defense abilities
3. A way of Life

Shogun, you definitely should try out the classes at Shanghai BJJ. I'm an experienced MMA fighter, and I started going there to sharpen up my ground game, but even so I was really surprised at the quality of the instruction that Ryan and Stan offer. This school gets my full stamp of approval. They have a lot to offer.

Teaching one subject or another is a profession I've devoted most of my adult life to- it's something I take very seriously, so I don't say it lightly when I say these guys are good teachers. They're very passionate about what they do, and they're very serious about helping their students learn.

I was also very impressed at how well even the beginner students understood the fundamentals of position, and how well the details of technique are broken down in each class.

It really is a great bunch of guys to train with and there's a lot you can learn from every one of them. If you're serious about grappling, definitely hit these guys up!

And just so we're clear, nobody is paying me to give this endorsement. I'm just a new student there. Just giving credit where credit is due.
