It's for sale on the street. A bone-headed snorer. Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford (not Essex) died in 1604, while new plays by Shakespeare continued to be produced for nine more years, including "The Tempest," partly inspired by events that occurred after the Earl's death.

"Me and You and Everyone We Know"

I liked “The Future” so much I decided to check out Miranda July’s first movie. Won a bunch of awards back in 2005 but I had never heard of it. It’s more low-budget looking than “The Future” (which is also low-budget), and funnier. "The Future" is more deadpan, less laugh out loud, has bigger themes, and is even more unconventional. Easily one of the best movies of 2011, even if it didn't get any Oscar nominations. Both are true originals.

The Future: pretentious piffle. Has to be seen to be believed but I wouldn't recommend it unless talking stuffed cats and moons are your thing.

New? She's been doing it for years! Who's the philistine?

And, btw,

pretentious (adj.)
1.intended to attract notice and impress others.
2.making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction.
3.(of a display) tawdry or vulgar.

In The Future's case, the first two apply (in my opinion. And we're all allowed to have an opinion are we not Mr C? Or is it only you?)

"Deux de la Vague" ("Two in the Wave")

Good introductory doc on la nouvelle vague, focusing on the ultimately fractured friendship between François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, and, caught in the middle, their shared creation, the iconic Jean-Pierre Leaud. Lots of great clips. A must-see for film buffs.

The Great Debators (2007)
found in the depths of Movies on Demand, on MAS flight yesterday.
Staring Denzel, produced by Oprah, depicts a very idealised and grand version of the success of Wiley College debating team.
The fashion and styling is delectable.
While the racism of the Jim Crow era is prevalent in this film it is sanitised for a modern and popular audience no doubt.
Forest Whitaker and his real life son Denzel are a good watch along side of Denzel Washington.

The Double - 3.5\5

A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

Not a bad spy flick.

Watched the 'Hannibal' quadrilogy in the last few days. All time classic, but nice to re-watch every once and a while.

Silence of the Lambs: 4/5
The main story, great acting and nice story.

Hannibal: 3/5
Heyy, that was succesful, lets make another one. It was allright but less than part 1

Red Dragon: 3.5/5
Dude's we're rich! Let's make something from when Hannibal was younger because we don't want to get too corny.

Hannibal Rising: 4/5
Jeez, they bought it! Let's go back a bit further and see if the people still like it!

All in all, eventhough part 1 and 4 are totally different kinds of movies, they are the best if you ask me.
Bought it in taikangroad dvd store, nice tin can Quadrilogy box.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

So this is the stuff of best-sellers these days. Shockingly predictable. Well-made as one would expect of a film by David Fincher, but basically a big "so what," with a drawn-out denouement that rubs out whatever impact that might have been mustered before. Gets by largely on the immense appeal of Daniel Craig, and of course Christopher Plummer is always worth watching.

"The Descendants"

How can a new movie seem so dated? They say Clooney has a lock on the Best Actor Oscar. If he wins, it'll have to be for keeping this phony family drama from sinking under the weight of its tortured contrivances. Seeing him riff on a scene that rips off Brando's great monologue to his dead wife in "Last Tango in Paris" is embarrassing. (It even lifts some of the same lines.) Good to see underused actors like Robert Forster and Beau Bridges. "F" for fake.

"A Dangerous Method"

Whoa - Keira Knightley gives what has to be the most crazy brave, waaaay out there performance of the year. And what has this awards season given her for her courage? Nothing. So long as the Establishment continues to treat each new Cronenberg movie like a hot potato, the Motion Picture Academy and its kind can't be taken seriously.

A Dangerous Method. 3/5.
Worth seeing for the performance of the two leads, Fassbender and Mortensen, and for an insight into the birth of psychoanalysis. But a major disappointment on two fronts. We have a right to expect much more from Cronenberg who seems to be stuck in second gear, maybe constrained (like Polanski with Carnage) by having to film a stage play, and Keira Knightley, God bless her, is woefully miscast. Her performance is worthy of a sixth form drama class. A shame, as she's shown in a couple of recent movies that she can act when she wants to.

two gems:

anonymous (as mentioned above and yes, in the stores)

extremely loud & incredibly close (forget about tom hanks and sandra bullock, who almost had cameos by comparison - the kid, thomas horn, was amazing)

4/5 for both

Not as good as the original. It's been dumbed down, dare I say it, for the American audience. But Daniel Craig does a fine job and is always worth watching. Oddly, I seem to recall he's the only non-Swedish actor who doesn't attempt a Swedish accent.

Being a paddy, I'd have to give it my vote. But it was a class movie, with plenty of 'Hot Fuzz' overtones. Gleeson was brilliant in it. If you liked it, check out another Irish flick called 'Perrier's Bounty' - not as good as The Guard, but still good enough.

"J. Edgar"

Leonardo DiCaprio is initially unconvincing as the all-powerful director of the FBI. He lacks gravitas. But over the course of two hours his performance becomes more persuasive. He gives it his all, and there's something to be said for dogged determination. Curiously, the more his character succumbs to paranoia, drug addiction, and sexual confusion, the more believable he becomes. An odd movie, one that refuses to take the easy path of wholesale condemnation, which is probably why it's been completely shut out on the awards circuit. With this film, and the criminally underrated "Hereafter," Clint Eastwood seems to be suffering the backlash that the critics like to unleash on anyone who rides high for too long.
