Whats the one thing you wish you'd brought?

Postby lostkiwi » Wed Apr 26, 2006 4:45 pm

Hi guys we are just packing up to head to Shanghai with 2 kids and looking for the last few items to add into the shipment. For those of you who have been there a while what do you find hard to get and wish you'd brought with you?

Cheers

OTC medicines like Tums, Gas-X, cold remedies (especially kids' medicines) , teething tablets, etc.
SHOES
Bakewear like muffin tins and cookie sheets
Any pots or pans that you're fond of (not great selection of high end cookware)
Any special food (health food, sugar substitute, etc) that you would miss

Hi

Does anyone know where, and if, you can buy Rennie here (as mentioned by Paulo)?

If you want high end pots and pans, go to Jimix Seve on Beijing Xi Lu (some of the best pizza also in town in attached restaurant) - it's a cook's dream with every high end kitchen gadget you can shake a cinnamon stick at (we are acquiring a nice set of Global knives as and when we can afford it). I also think Ikea near the Shanghai Stadium has a great selection of affordable and durable everyday kitchen stuff - i would have been lost without it.

Shoes...indeed, Zara on Nanjing Road is the only place to get fashionable women's off-the-peg shoes in 'foreigner' size. Make that fashionable anything in foreigner size.

If you're packing it in the shipment:
whole wheat flour
stockpile of vitamins
motrin
good books and magazines (there are lots, but it will take a while to find where to buy these, and since you'll be in China, you won't know what the government has edited....)
Any clothes you might want to have copied

And of course, leave all your appliances 110 appliances at home.

If you wear a bra size bigger than a C cup, bring them with you. If you wear shoe size larger than womens size 8 US (40), bring those too. Mens shoes, anything larger than size US 10 (42?) is difficult to find.

When I went back to the US last summer, I bought vitamins, jeans that fit my hips, and 2 really good pairs of shoes. Oh, and maple syrup, coffee & almond butter! You can buy all of these things here though, but only if you're willing to pay a lot for them.

If you want books about Chinese history, or any kind of non-bestseller type books, bring those because you won't find them here.

You can find all kinds of kids' medicines here, no need to bring those.

-all kinds of OTC medication you and your kids are used to (s.a. Paracetamol fever and pain relief is not used here, you can find ibuprofen though, teething relief, mosquito bite relief for kids: the chinese stuff is great but very/too strong and you can't use it on the face)
-I still import those bubble baths with herbs you can use for little children when they caugh and sneeze,
-homeopathic medication if you use it,
-disposable washcloths - only found wet wipes so far
-cosmetics: most of the stuff here has whitening in it
-I still import quality kid's leather shoes, my children have very narrow feet and it's a hassle to find the right shoes here for them
- pack a "homesick box" with all your goodies you love and need when feeling down, it might help to get over it

You can get whole wheat flour in Metro. Thell sell in 1kg sack.
I see some international and local brand of Corn Tortilla Chips

Second to vitamins as we're not sure if intl. brand in China vitamins is real or fake.

If you're normal size, all kind of garment, shoes, bags, underwear, bedding, are available.
