When did Carrefour become a local wetmart?

Got a recipe? A restaurant recommendation? Got a comment about eating and drinking? Post something in the FOOD forum.

Metro was my preferred port of call, especially for meats. Carrefour was only for some items not found at Metro and last was Shitty...er City Shop and Pines Jinqiao, only for one thing, broiler chickens for some reason... or if I needed Uzbekistanian fermented beaver cheese (Pines Jinqiao tended to stock the most arcane food items that maybe they thought expats would have at a party while ignoring, you know, normal things like pancake mix).

Who in their right mind actually "buys" pancake mix? It's like the easiest thing in the world to make.

Yes, I would agree with you because in China its expensive as hell AND you can't get the original mix. However I buy it (original mix) now because its cheap and I only add the oil and eggs ........ its called convenience, that's a word not applicable to China.

Prolly the same people who buy jarred salsa, instant coffee, packaged yogurt, canned anything.

Not really... it's literally flour, salt, sugar, a little baking powder and a little baking soda. There, done deal, it costs practically nothing and if your kitchen is lacking any of those things you kinda just fail at life.

Ahem...

And where do you buy these ?

a little baking powder and a little baking soda

Yea, there you go, not cheap any more dammit! ...

泡打粉 and 苏打粉, practically any market will have it and it costs nothing. The powder costs a bit more, but you're only looking at like 15-20 kuai for 500g of it if that.

So easy, even a laowai could do it.
You need these things... they are all cheap

Here we go, about 30 seconds into it (1 minute if you count snapping the pic). 1c flour, 2tbsp sugar, 2tsp powder, 0.5tsp soda, 0.25tsp salt

And that's all there is to "pancake mix".

Add in the beaten egg, 1 bag of milk and like 2tbsp of oil, mix that stuff up good and...

mmm pancakes....

now, if you want buttermilk... add in some vinegar to the milk and let it sit a few minutes before adding it to the mix... there, buttermilk pancakes.

In our next installment... garlic powder and why you are stupid for paying money for it when garlic is so stupidly cheap here.
