Le Garcon Chinois (vietnamese) with 9 girlfriends. RMB 230 each which covered food and 4 bottles of wine. Food was really tasty but they struggled on the service side of things. Which wasn't a surprise, as when I made the reservation initially they were concerned about their staffing for the night to cope with a 'crowd'. However, they did offer free dessert for their lack of service during the evening which was appreciated...
Great place but is much better suited to smaller groups!!

at home. MaPo Tofu, Tomatoes and Eggs, and a shredded cabbage and pork with rice. Basic but always hits the spot. Guess its kind of fancy to have three dishes at home but, oh well. :) Do it almost everynight. BUT plan to eat out tonight so... :D

One of the small holes-in-the-wall on Zhongshan lu near Yishan lu. Always go there for some outrageously good Niurou Chaofan or Gongbao Jiding. With a quart of Suntory always under 10 kuai. Can't fault it.

Jimix
607 Beijing Xi Lu

Italian food, had salad, pizza, inexpensive bottle of wine. They do 10% off with Enjoy Card.

Pizza was great - arugala and parma ham, thin crust, nice sauce and just the right amount of cheese.

Pizza, 83rmb, wine 150rmb, salad 38rmb.

We sat braved the outside, which would have been a really nice place to be --if it were late September.

Skip the tiramisu, Jimix is yet another Shanghai restaurant that makes a poor excuse for the real thing.

Was at Babarossa last night... Ambience was nice and food was quite good too. Had a veal tagine (about 130) that was decent though not exceptional.... Face has a new Moroccan restaurant in Pudong that serves pretty good Moroccan cuisine too.

What's BYB? Is it a restaurant, or an abbreviation for something? Sounds like an interesting combination of foods...Yunnan Lamb Noodles and Caesar Salad?

whats with all the "all you can eat" places. Are the Chinese trying to fatten us up for the slaughter?

All you can eat = buffet pretty much. Are you telling me there are no buffets in Australia?

I guess I should have said that I meant, all you can eat a la carte options. Of course buffets are everywhere, but these sushi/sake deals, etc are not common.

Had a 32 rmb chocolate truffle cake at Arugula yesterday. Tasted like a peanut brownie purchased from a place like Starbucks and left in the fridge for 2 months. The cream on the side was actually some sort of cream substitute, so there was nothing redeeming about the whole plate. I complained about the cake to a server, asking him to take the cake to the chef so the chef could try it, or at least be aware that there were quality issues. 45 minutes later I noticed the same waiter lounging at the bar. I smiled at him, he smiled back, and it was as if he had completely forgot my complaint. Arugula has lost any chance of my repeat business.
