-M2 or Muse
-Mixed crowd, massive
-every night after 11pm
-dancing scene, live performances, girls

-Richbaby or Richy (more or less the same to me, Richbaby is a bigger place with 2 separated arenas)
-mostly local clubbing animals, sometimes tourists
-every night after 11pm
-dacning, girls, dice games, quite smoky...dj with mainstream pop/club music

-The Apartment
-mostly expats from everywhere, some youngsters
-Weekday for cozy lay back drinks and chat
-Weekend with more younger crowd and mainstream club music
-more talkative people

-Shelter
-people who appreciate real house/techno/minimal music
-night time after 11 (weekend)
-underground place, a cave with an intelligent stylish crowd

-C's bar
-Everything, local, expats, unexpected
-night time after 10
-speakeasy, unbelievable cheap drinks, lots of graffiti and funky stuff for the interior

-Katel
-quieter, mature people with wine
-anytime at night
-ambient music, cosy place, french speaking people

-G+
-Local/Laowai 8:2
-night time after 11pm
-clubbing scene, some live performances as well

-Happy Valley (Pudong)
-Local/Laowai 5:5
-anytime since 6pm til 2am
-friendly female staff, pool table, play music on request, speakeasy

-Dekota/Monkey
-Mixed, more educated, mature
-Anytime 6pm onwards for dekota, Monkey after 11pm
-enter Dekota first and then Monkey, be amazed

-Luna/Brownsugar
-Tourists, local mix foreigners
-Weekend/weekday night time
-Live band music, drinks are a bit pricey, nice atmosphere

-Departure 10
-almost nobody is there, mostly black
-as late as possible after 1am for weekends
-nicely decorated themed club/bar as an aircraft, dj as the pilot playing rap music servers as the cabin crew

-I love Shanghai
-the place hostss different event through the week, e.g. beer ping pong night on thursday
-international, school kids, couch surfers, tourists, expats
-cool small place, home style bar, rock/alternative music in the background, playing jacka** video,
- pool table, dart, sofa, etc.

MistyG, Great info. Thanx home.
By the way, how about the fumes?
Is smoking allowed in all these places and if so are they doing like the chimneys ??
Coming from no smoking club scene and wonder how it is like in S'hai.
Lets :party::

Where ever theres plenty of scotch. There are so many choices around hengshan lu. Where you will most likely find me any given night. Try the drunken dragon pub crawl on Thursdays.

wow! thanks, i forgot about hengshan lu!
but i have only been to
Not Me, Zapatas, and Soho

i have been in Shanghai since July 2011...keep exploring

i also have been some very 100% local disco such as Pub1 @Huaihai lu no.1 (i won't go there again)
and i also been to bar rouge, and VUE bar @ the top of Hyatt on the bund got its the best view of the bund i am quite sure, and then Cha @ the top of Indigo hotel at the other end of the bund is also not bad (terrible drinks tho, only bottle beer is recommended, say no to cocktails @ Cha)

btw, there is an awesome KTV in Changning district name 台北純K (right at Weining lu MTR), they have very innovative new facilities and tons of latest/oldest english songs (rihanna, adele etc. are all on the list) each room featured a studio recording mic (at least it looks like one) with lighting selection according to the song mode and of course drinks and games, price is just around rmb 100/head :D

from what i know, most of this places on the list allow smoking
but for better ventilation, i suggest, the apartment, kartel, those are decent places

for richbaby/richy, muse1/2 these are the most smoky ones...if you can't stand too much 2nd-hand smoke, not recommended

I would say, with less locals, there will be less smoke, and even if there are smokers, people tend to be considerate if there is a balcony/terrace/rooftop etc.

one more place to go right at Jingan' temple
WINDOWS
Cheap Drinks and Snack
Sport bar
afterwork expats / local 8:2
Indoor non-smoking, with pool and dart
out door smoking tables with heaters

Cvrve at Portman for some awesome cocktails without suffering the deafening noise. Good office crowd without the working girls is nice too.
Long Bar at Waldorf Astoria for the beautiful ambience but it's a bit quiet.
