Where do you go to buy 'real' high end hifi?

Postby ShanghaiSifi » Wed Sep 05, 2007 2:13 pm

Hi

I'm new in Shanghai and like my hifi. I'm an audiophile.

Where are the hifi shops that specialise in separates and cater to the high end? I'm not snobbish or anything and am interested to hear good Chinese hifi not just European, Japanese, American etc. However, so far I've only discovered large outlets where they also sell tvs and white goods and the hifi is all multi channel and sold with television etc. I'm just looking for stereo gear, that can be auditioned and installed if necessary. Does this exist in Shanghai?

Where is good to buy cds by bands from America and the UK?

Many thanks,

Simon

Best Buy across from Grand Gateway at Xujiahui subway stop would also have what your looking for. I would feel pretty confident you are getting the real thing there. I was in the store two weeks ago, very similiar to US stores, have the Geek Square area which should be able to handle an of your installation and setup needs. Good Luck!

unless BB has radically changed their inventory in the past few yrs, there is no way they can be considered a hi-end audio store.

If you're an audiophile, you're likely to be disappointed. It's all very run-of-the-mill, made in China stuff that's being sold in Shanghai (even brands like Wharfdale and BW have some of their stuff made in Suzhou and Dongguan).

The upper floors (I think 4 or 5) of Metro City in Xujiahui have some audio shops, as does Yolo in Zhongshan Park.

After finally settling on my HT set-up, I'm also in the speaker market for some GOOD fronts.

Not looking to blow the walls out of my place, but definitely something that is good quality and will handle some power.

Studio FH is a rip off for expats who have no idea of the prices. They mark up 50% from the market prices on TaoBao and they charge extra for installation. They also charge 800 Kwai to come to your home and check it out.

A great deal right!

If you like "tube" sound, chinese manufactures make good valve preamps, amps.
Then pick up "antique old stock" tubes on your next trip back home to UK, US,.. you have high end tube sound amplification.
There are a few medium high end chinese loudspeakers for what would be "low end prices in US or Uk".

Real subwoofers like 12-18" ers are hard to find around here. However, since you are more likely to have neighbors(next paper wall apart) here, maybe doing without the earthmovers will save the warth of angry neighors.

Try walking along FenYang Lu. There are several shops there with some nice stuff, including tube amps and all. B&W shops in China (there is one on FenYang Lu) sell the same speakers as in the rest of the world: their low end stuff is made in China, their high end stuff is made in the UK.

There will also be the Shanghai International AV Show at the end of March. You usually get the major brands and several of the esoteric ones showing there.

DeBeauregard, if you know enough to do your own installation properly go to TaoBao (but be careful of the knock-offs and factory seconds, and forget about warranty service). If you want to have someone who knows what they are doing check out your place, design a system for you, install it properly, calibrate it, and provide after-sales service, you have to pay for it. Your call.
