Ok... so, I used to live in a place where I met all those cool people, I mean, they all dress coolly, DIYed clothes or second hands, they have nice tattoos, dreadlocks or colorful hairs, a lot of them are vegetarians, they love cultures, music and art, they all try hard to learn Chinese and try their best to interact with locals despite the frustration they get from time to time. Girls don't make up or dress up desperately to impress a guy and guys are not that pretentious from all the attention they get. Just simply cool people to hang out with, play jam session with, drink and chat with... I seldom see them here. Do they exist in Shanghai ? Or am I just hanging in wrong places so I don't meet them?

People with dreads are not cool, they are relaxed.
People with colorful hair are mostly punks (like in punk-rock) which are very lively and way too outgoing, so the oposite of cool.

All in all, where I come from, you would call the place you describe as "University" Maybe try those ...

Or you try M1nt or M2, I heard people there are uber-cool.

By "cool" I mean, they're open to new things, dare to dress differently and don't follow the mainstream. But those people I met are not just university students, some of them are in their 30s already.

I have the impression that young people here just want to get drunk and laid... Though that said, I did meet one or two "cool" uni students on short-term exchange from time to time, unfortunately they stay 1 or 2 months only.

Of course. Though if you dress DIYed or second hand vintage... you are less likely to dress the same, maybe a bit similar style yes, but not exactly the same piece.
That's why I said it's not just look, but also their mentality and interest. Dressing says something but not all.

I can't imagine Shanghai having an alt scene.. Maybe I'm wrong. If I am I want to find it.
