Where to buy curry paste?

Postby yyfamily » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:39 am

I did a search in the forum and some posters said City Super carries curry paste. I went to the City Shop last evening on Hong Mei Lu but I couldn't find any. Where did you get yours? Either Indian or Thai is fine. Thanks.

When I was in Shanghai I managed to fimd mine at City Super in the Shanghai Center.

You could also try Carrefour in Gubei. Otherwise get someone to bring some in. I did that too.

generally, it's on the first floor on the shelves opposite the meat counter (hong mei city). they've been moving things around lately, though. half the 2nd floor is reversed now. and they've been making a dent on the first floor product as well. they have a few brands of curry paste.

You could just make you own if you cant find any, all the spices are available easilly at the big supermarkets, but I'm sure I've seen the pre made stuff in Premier Food Markets in the basement of The Grand Gateway in Xuliahui.

I've got recepies for:

Thai Red Curry paste
Thai Green Curry Paste
Chu Che Curry Paste
Thai Yellow Curry Paste
Balti Curry Paste
Madras Curry Paste
Vindaloo Curry Paste
Jungle Curry Paste

They take a bit of time but if your going to the trouble of doing a great curry it might well be worth it :)

Try the local supermarket. It's around and out there, but you have to look.

If not Pines (Longxi Lu/Jianhe Lu, Anfu Lu/Wukang Lu) then try Parkson's I have found both Indian and Thai Shrimp wet pastes there.

I've made both from scratch and it's a long and tedious process.

We have just been there for 3 weeks so I have a very poor knowledge of the shopping locations of the city :
I am looking for thai green curry paste. Does the Carrefour in Gubei sell some? Or any cityshop?

Thanks

Galdred, the supermarket in the basement of the Japanese Shopping mall (Jing An temple) and so does City Shop at Shanghai Center have Red/ Green Thai curry pastes. I am sure all the locations of City Shop have it.

The Japanese curry that is been sold in all local stores comes in 4-5 different spice variations and they are made locally, thus sweet. The same brand has imported versions sold in supermarkets that carry international products.

No, Isetan is in Westgate Mall, but there is also a supermarket that might have these things. Again in the basement.

Thank you, I found some in the freshmart near Jing An Temple. I didn't found any at the cityshop, but I probably didn't look long enough.

The curry mix they sell at FeiDan is crap. The stuff they sell at Pines in the plastic packages is the best I've tried so far. The City Super or whatever the Japanese grocery store at Jing'an is called has some okay selections. I'd try Pines, as they also have kaffir lime leaves, sweet basil, and lemongrass right there in stock.

Seen it at all the Carrefour stores, its in a small jar, labelled in english and usually around the cook-in-sauces, packets of soup and coat n cook packet mixtures. Think its around 15rmb if memory serves
