Where to buy imported English storybooks for kids

Postby golddd2 » Mon Aug 14, 2006 4:46 pm

We've gone up and down Fuzhou Lu and Garden Books in Changle Lu, no luck finding imported good quality younger kids' books from 3 y.o. and up.

Maisy Mouse is rapidly losing her appeal.

Any ideas where we could find good books will be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried the Foreigners Bookstore at Fuzhou Lu? Last time I was there they had a huge selection, from Thomas the Tank, Spongebob, to Dinos Tales...

tnmom is right - the Chatterhouse bookstore in Puxi TImes Square has a great range of kids books. From memory, there were a lot of maisy mouse books last time i visited. Definitely worth a look at.

they just got a book section above the City Shop near/in(?) Hongqiao. There is a reading area with a coffee bar and an okay selection of English books, including children's. Great selection of cookbooks and magazines too. They were just setting up and it looked like they were going to get plenty more books in judging by the amount of shelf room they still had available.

Dear all,

Thanks all for your kind replies - sorry for the delayed response but have been travelling extensively for work. I'll give the Puxi Chatterbox a whirl, and look again at the FL bookshop in Fuzhou Lu (must have missed that section completely).

Cheers

golddd2, The imported English books section is on top floor of the Foreign Language Book Store on Fuzhou Lu. There is no escalator or elevator. You have to walk up all the way to the top (4th or 5th floor).

If you go to the Fuzhou Lu bookstore with a stroller, there actually is an elevator; the easiest way to reach it is, oddly enough, from outside the store in the small alley to the right of the store.

Thanks for the hints on the FLBS on Fuzhou Lu. I hadn't been back for months until today, and they've REALLY expanded the 4th floor quality and quantity.

A little pricey, with some books at around double face-value, but still generally cheaper than having them mailed over. Unfortunately only Disneyized Winnie the Pooh - no real A. A. Milne. Also no Shel Silverstein or simple Dr Seuss. Also no Hairy Maclary. Still, a lot better than what was available not so long ago.

Thanks again, and can certainly recommend the shop to others. Next weekend, off to Chatterbox in Huaihai Lu

Cheers

For those in Pudong, there is now a Chaterhouse bookstore at Superbrand Mall (正大广场). It's on the 6th floor.

I think you will find what you want at Charterhouse. I vividly remember three or four Shell Silverstein titles and at least a dozen Dr. Seuss books. Seem to remember a shelf of childhood classics so you may find the others, also. Good luck!

Whoops, should be Charterhouse, not Chatterbox.

Thanks Deppy and MahamYe. I'm there.

If you speak Chinese (although maybe the women who runs it speaks English?) I suggest www.babyread.com.

The books on the website are not exhaustive. As many children's books are actually manufactured in China, they can be bought quite cheaply. This women sells English books well below the manufacturer's recommended USD price printed on the book's jacket. She has a storage space in Tian An Hua Yuan (an apartment complex near Century Park and Thumb Plaza) where you can go and see what she has.

I have bought some great English board books from her, pop up books and Chinese children's books. She also sometimes has Crayola brand pads and art supplies.

Hi, dear golddd2, I am a representative of a French publishing house(Bayard Presse) in Shanghai which is one of the most famous houses in Europe that publish books and magazines for children. Its subsidiary in UK publishes some excellent magazines titled Box Magazine which consists of Story Box(for children over 3 years old), Adventure Box(for children over 6 years old) and Discovery Box(for children over 9 years old), and now there has been many foreign children in China, especially in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, reading our magazines since we set up an office in Shanghai. A subscription for one year gives your children 10 issues, which are imported from UK and mailed to your children directly.
For more information, you can visit our website: www.bayard-magazines.co.uk.
If you are really interested, please contact me directly, I will afford some free sample magazines to your children to read before you decide whether you subscribe them. Our office is in Xuhui district, your visit is welcome all time.
My telephone is 64670481, and my cellphone is 13916057309, and my email is mengli@bayard-shanghai.com.cn
Thank you
