Where to donate old clothes?

Postby look2me4guidance » Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:35 pm

Cleaning out my wardrobe for when that warm weather does arrive!

Rather than hurl a great heap of perfectly ok clothes in the bin, where can I donate them?

Is there a shop I can visit or an organisation that can come and collect them?

I understand China is not as second hand friendly as back home but I am sure there must be a way they can be re-used.

Thanks.

If it was kids/teenager sized then I would be happy to collect and deliver to a useful place mate...

River of Hearts
River of Hearts is a charity program of Community Center Shanghai. We collect items at various drop-off locations around Shanghai and re-distribute them to people in need throughout China.

A Pleines Mains
Mission: We collect items which you do not need anymore but which can be highly valuable for those in need. We allocate your donated goods according to the exact needs of each establishment we support (orphanages, retirement homes, schools, institutes for the handicapped) and those in excellent condition can be sold at our monthly sales in Hongqiao.

The owner of the Kangaroo Bar (Yongjia lu near Maoming lu) collects winter clothing (and school supplies) for school children in Qinghai province. If you want the information on where to drop the clothes or his contact pm me.

tnmom, you are a STAR! I have two big boxes of clothes, shoes and bags and could not for the life of me recall this fantastic group. It will be great to give to those who need.

Now I can go and do more some more clothes shopping.

I recommend River of heard too. Very nice people there, have been the sorting part once in Pudong. You check out there website, then you'll see the drop off points nearby you.

Tnmom - So can any of the organisations pick up the clothing items from a home address? I have a fair bit, some items hardly ever worn and too good to throw in the bin. Unfortunately, they won't fit in my Bike Basket ;-)

Never heard that the drop off points can pick up the donations. My suggestion is you take a taxi or a van with all of the donations.

I simply give them to my ayi - not as a "gift", that would be insulting - but rather as things I no longer want and that she can dispose of however she wants - I've seen her wear some at some point and I believe she gives or sells the rest (my clothes are usually in good shape - just stuff I don't wear) because she always takes them with her (doesn't bin them).

I know that A Pleines Mains will do a pick up for a large donation - that's why I included them as well as River of Hearts. They came by every year after our neighborhood rummage sale and would take whatever was left - usually not too much since the workers would usually take a lot of it at the end.
Both organizations are expat run charities that depend on volunteers so any pick ups would be made by one of their volunteers who has a car.
