where to find a good tailor in shanghai

lababillarde, I'm not sure I understand your post, but if you're looking for a tailor who makes men's clothes, try DJs on the 100 block of Nanchang Lu, just north of Fuxing Park.

I just had a men's suit made there with imported English wool for 2000RMB. The other places I looked for good quality men's suits (Dave, WW Chan) were charging about twice that. The fabric market suits, though much cheaper, weren't the quality I was looking for. I'm sure a tailor could tell the difference between my 2000RMB suit and a 4000RMB suit--but I sure can't, nor can my friends who have a better eye for suits than I do. It's good quality and fits really well.

No shop, no advertising, works in a secret cave somewhere. How did you hear about him in the first place?

Word of mouth of course.

lababillarde: he also does women's clothes. He made a couple of suits for my gf which came out very nicely as well. Not sure about qi pao and the like, but he will tell you if he can't.

How long on average doe it take for Mr Zhu to make a suit?

I have an excellent Hugo Boss suit that fits perfectly, If I was to bring this with me and ask him to "Copy it", would he be able to do it and how long would it take roughly?

Jackson Xue in the Fabric Market, stall 153 I think is good, nothing fantastic but reliable and more importantly good customer service.

Shirts/jackets are better than pants, usually I take a pair of pants for him to "clone".

well, some of them failed to "clone" even i gave them a sample. they still do it "their very own way" :@ got quite mad. but given my small size (a fat midget) it's hard to buy clothes :(

Right, afterall the fabric market has never once made any clothes for anyone. They are just salesmen/saleswomen that take orders in the market and then sub out the work of making your garment to one of the many tailors in the garment district behind the fabric market.

Go directly to one of the tailors behind the market where you (or if you don't speak Chinese, someone that does) can actually explain to the tailor exactly what you want to have made. You will most likely get exactly what you ordered and pay a lot less than the extra markup you are paying to someone that often does not understand your order in the fabric market.

The garment district is huge so plan on spending quite a bit of time looking through fabric stalls and talking to tailors to get your desired garment properly made.

Hi there,

i am visiting Shanghai in June and would like to make some shirts

does anyone know the mobile or contact number of Fatty (the guys wear tailor listed on this thread) ?

and does anyone know his full address?

otherwise,

does anyone know any other tailors that are just tailors and not bundled with the salespeople from the fabric shops, as i want a tailor who would sew from start to end, instead of a salesperson outsourcing the work as from my experience, u get exactly what u want from the person who constructs your work for you.

please help.

and if u know any other tailors beside Mr Zhu, who is skilled at tailoring men's shirts, please place the contact info and your shopping experience with his/her/their tailoring services here.

thanks in advance.

(Unfortunately, I later heard about the Seinfeld show he he he). I cannot recommend his work enough. Everything he has done has been perfect. Call Mr. Zhu at 130 0318 8035.

I will need some suits so I may call your chap up. I take it he can copy anything from your pictures?

SateliteTV,

it helps if u have the actual suit you like the tailor to copy.

basically, the tailors can copy very well, when they have an actual reference.

if you must use pictures, make sure it's detailed so that you diminish the number of blind spots for him / her.

Well it would be nice to meet a tailor who actually can design a suit that enhances the wearers looks.

I will bring some of my costumes from Priscella Queen of the Desert apparell ok?

Fatty is located at 275 多稼路 in Shanghai. I have not used him for shirts but there are pleaty of independent tailors around his shop to choose from.

agree with the suggestion of Taipan Custom tailor. it produces with italian materials and the cut is really neat. It is of course not cheap as other markets ... but you have to consider that the material (italian cashmere or wool) is very expensive. The cottons are really nice.

For those who are looking for another level of quality; here is a high end fancy pansy place where my laobans get their suits:
http://www.wwchan.com/index.php

Apparently really good quality as of course one would expect for that price...

www.slbespoke.com
do videos on the back of taxis; pretty designer so apparently they add more value than just good tailoring.
this company apparently does mainly executives and word of mouth references. has great cloth like loro piana, and works with Quintessentially.
