Where to find children's books

Postby zhongshanyuan » Tue Nov 23, 2004 8:52 pm

Any suggestions on how to keep up the supplies for a school-aged book worm? The SH Public Library has Egnlish books for adults only. Do people buy from Amazon.com and ship to SH or are there private children's book clubs where kids get to exchange/share their collections? Thanks for ideas/suggestions.

Fukuzen Second Hand Shop in Vanke Plaza (Gubei) has a small range of English books - both adult and children - at reasonable prices.

Does your child attend an international school? A good number have excellent collections.

Otherwise just network with other parents I guess

Thanks nicklar. I will check out the book shop you mentioned. The int'l school he will go to has a small library. Will find out later how many collections they have. But usu the little one couldn't find enough interesting books from the school library alone and we have to make several trips a week to the local public library (in the US).

You may also want to consider an e-book reader such as the Kindle 2, Sony reader or one of the many other models available or soon to be available. Although you need to be in the US to download within 60 seconds best sellers on Kindle 2 over the Sprint network, you can still download in Shanghai via your computer and then USB to the Kindle.

My wife is not technically oriented and loves hers as she is an avid reader and Kindle is much lighter and more convenient to use than a book or group of books to carry around. She also likes to download magazines and newspapers that are not available in her market. E-book readers cost in the $250-350 range and are worth every cent.

These readers are mostly B&W for now but color is starting to show up on the market.

The Kindle 2 is designed and sold by Amazon and you can download about 245,000 books from Amazon to a Kindle, although Kindle will only hold about 1500 books at one time. Not too bad for a device that weighs about 10 ounces.
