Where to find Decent Clothes?

Postby booboo » Wed Apr 19, 2006 10:19 pm

I'm not one for the outrageous fashion gear that is sold in the womens clothing at department stores around Shanghai. I just want simple, decently priced clothing such as Gap brand. Does anyone know of a market similar to that of the baby market on Pu'an Lu where I can buy myself brand name clothes at knockoff prices? Surely there must be something out there? Please help before I give in to wearing sequins, fur & huge D&G or Dior stamps on fake t-shirts!

I know a Zara just opened on Nanjing Road across from Plaza 66 I believe. Prices are high, but styles are European. As for the Gap, I think there are actually a couple stores here. One in Ba Bai Ban in Pudong.

Have you tried having clothes made at the Fabric Market? It just moved to the end of Lu Jia Bang rd (a continuation of zhao jia bang/xu jia hui rd), right by the river. Not far from the old location. Take the 43 bus from xu jia hui, or the 802 from people's square (stop on xizang rd. across from raffles). Ask a taxi to go to Lu Jia Bang Lu / Nan Ciang Jie.

As for knock-offs, I'm really not sure. Is xiangyang still around? Have you checked there?

Giordano and Giordano Ladies are Gap-like
Benetton
Miss Sixty
Esprit

There are a number of familiar stores in town... the larger malls on Nanjing Road, Huai Hai and in Xu Jia Hui may be good places to find familiar brands. Expect certain things to be higher than at home but there are basics and classics to be found.

Generally avoid the knock-offs. Occasionally I have found a piece that holds up but many of the knock-offs I have bought over the last 4 years had some problems: the material was flimsy; the colors faded; the stitching came undone; the buttons fell off too easily; etc.

In general you get what you pay for. Suck up to the big prices and try to buy the good stuff when it is on sale...

Thanks for the replies. I think i may have been misunderstood.. what I hope to find is a MARKET (like the Childrens' clothing market on Pu'an Lu) that sells real brand name, good quality clothes for export -not copied, at knock-off PRICES. Surely adults & childrens clothes get made at the same factory? If the unwanted childrens stuff goes to pu'an, then where would the adults clothes get sold at..?
Now I hope you get what I mean..

that takes a bit more work... don't know of any single market that sells primarily genuine goods, but there are a number of small shops around that do. problem is that they are spread out all over the city and will oftetimes stock a combination of knock-offs and the real mccoy. hotwind stores often receive a number of factory overruns, irregulars and slightly damaged goods. a few of the stores on baoqing (hengshan) road have some overruns, as do a few further south on xiangyang, places off nanjing, huaihai and changshu...

depending on the particular brand and country to which the items are imported, children's clothing and adult clothing can be made at different factories due to safety regulations and machine sizes.

good luck with your search and let us know if you are successful in finding a place! would be fantastic to have an easy, one-stop shopping option with good prices!

Great, thanks for the tips. Hotwind is quite good, I also really liked that store that was across the road from the old fabric market on Dongjia Du, it used to stock designer brands. I wonder if it is still there?

yes, it is there. I drove past there today. The old fabric market is demolished already, but the clothing store is still across the street.

At the Qipu Lu clothes market they sell clothes which are supposedly for export on the very top floor. Some is good quality, some is not. They price differently according to whether you are an individual buyer or wholesale/you are buying for retail. If you know someone who has a clothes shop it is best if you go with them. Go very early if possible.

But I agree that you get what you pay for.

But at Qipu Lu there are very many buildings! When you say top floor, top floor of which building do you mean?
