Excellent area to live, very central. You may want to avoid the busiest area, ie in the middle of Xujiahui. I have no specific place in mind, especially at this price where I dont have much experience but loads of "local" and more upscale apartment buildings on Nandanlu/Xietulu, Tianyaoqiaolu, Puhuitanglu, etc. I would look up at the ads in local real estate agencies in the area, prices are low these days + websites ad to avoid going through agency.

I used to live on Nandan Dong lu and now I live on Xietu lu, you won't have a problem finding an apartment here in that price range. There are loads and loads and loads of estate agents around this area, so when you arrive just go and ask a few and they'll be able to help you. Also, PM me about the time you're coming as I might be moving out of an apartment on Xietu Lu at that time. Emphasis on the word MIGHT though, but PM then anyway.

Great area to live, but for 2500/mth as a max price, you won't be living in a nice apt. Even in that area, older apartments usually start at 2500/mth, and thats for 1 bedroom only - and pretty crappy interior. Such a popular area so demand keeps the prices fairly high, even for the old apartments. If you're happy to walk 15mins, you can find plenty around that price - along Xietu Rd - towards the underground Carrefour, but even that area (2-3 blocks in any direction) is increasing in price. You may want to consider increasing your rental budget to 3000-3500/mth to give you more choice.
Are you already living in China (another city) or living abroad coming to China for the first time???

You can find apartments for that price, so long as you don't mind sharing. My first apartment was 2100RMB a month, now I've got 2200RMB a month and they were both pretty nice. But I might have got lucky.

Oh yeah - didn't think of that. Its not something I normally want to do, but if you want to share a 2-3 bedroom apt in that area (2500 max) with other person (full price @ 4-5k/mth) then that would be quite feasible. Easier to arrange this once you are here though.

No probs - if you are coming from Tianjin - then SH is NOT cold for you. Winter is almost over, so I don't think there are too many weeks of cooler weather ahead. I've been in China since 2000, most of that time in SH.
I've found the weather here reasonable - more comfortable than Shenzhen, not as hot as Wuhan, and not as cold as BJ.
I don't think prices will rise at all.....but in that price bracket, they might not drop either. Hit the local agencies when you arrive in SH.
2500 is a huge stretch (limited options) if you want to live alone. Sharing is the way to go if that is your budget.

You must be nuts to avoid going thru an agency.
Recipe for disaster.
