They work here. They make money here. Their wives / families are here. They are considering their future prospects.

In short: they are willing to endure the pain of being here (should be familiar to Chinese, right? chi ku, 吃苦) because of reasons that are worth more to them.

I've seen more Chinese who does not seem to like Shanghai, than I've seen expats...

I blame the Canadian government. They make it too damn hard and slow to get a visa for Chinese wives.

I don't mind admitting it. I really don't like Shanghai much. I don't like it compared to my own country, and I don't like it compared to other places in China. It obviously has its positives but they are being outweighed by the negatives.

The fact of the matter is that this is where my business is, and thus where I am. Once business moves elsewhere, I will be elsewhere. I don't hate it here, because there are many things I don't like doing (the dishes, for example) but I don't hate those either. Just facts of life. Still don't like them though.

I never loved Shanghai, SO, i'm not there. That just is overpopulated, overpriced, overnoiced anthill.

DITTO

Shanghai has it moments and most of those moments are not involved with the locals, rather they are involved with other EXPAT friends going out to restaurants, bars, socialising, and generally not mentally being in China. Right?

Have Chinese have become a bit too big for its britches? Twenty years ago there was crap, now after all the investment from overseas has China become a spoiled "Little Emperor? A twenty year old brat full of piss and vinegar who knows everything and doesn't need anyone any more.

You want to hear complaining? Go with a Chinese (trade fair) tour group to another country. We are amateurs.

I gave you the answers, but you're not listening. Why did you start this thread? It seems you are not looking for an answer but just want to play the old "go back to your own country instead of criticizing another" argument off on us.

I'll nip it in the bud. Criticism is generally meant to improve something, not just to point and laugh. I cannot blame you for not understanding this, because you are Chinese (probably), and this concept is strange to you. But it's true - when 'foreigners' say they don't like it when you spit, push, shout, or are generally being rude, they say it because they wish it were different. Most of us would genuinely be happy to see China change for the better. Criticism is simply pointing out the wrongs that should be right.

So when you go around telling foreigners to "go back home", think of this. We are here for reasons that weigh heavier than the simple like or dislike of a location. We voice discontent because we think there are issues that could change and make China a nicer and better place to live. For us, but probably also for you.

You also seem to be in the illusion that people can just choose to be wherever they want and proceed to... I don't know, bum out? What exactly do you suggest I do, if I go back to my home country? I cannot do my job there, so I would have to look for another. Why would I want that?

well...

i personally find shanghai absolutely horrible. it really is. it is dirty is SHITE, polluted like few other places i have lived. the locals here are anything but friendly! foreigners are by no means welcome here. we are "accepted" or "tolreated", but nothing else. just think about the whole "there is a foreigner - let'z go screw him!"-thing. no matter you rent a place, buy a car or a fake watch. has nothing to do with bargaining or so. of course the usual rudeneness which is often excused with "different culture" or "does not know it any better" does not help either to like this place.

simply put, most people/foreigners i know are here for the money or short-term carreer advancement and development. i know exactly one person (foreigner) who REALLY enjoys living in shanghai. that really is not too many.

for me, i am really looking forward to getting the fck outta here.

shanghainese in China is like new yorker in US.
Many people came here,to find jobs or do businesses. But at the bottom of their heart, they just don't like this city and its people.
Why? i don't know ...The government is even discouraging we shanghainese speaking our own dialect.
Let's Go Yankees.

Because not all of us are here on a pleasure cruise with a guitar and a backpack. Some of us actually have to work here.
I am definitely not here to improve my health.

Which is what I said

Shanghai has it moments and most of those moments are not involved with the locals, rather they are involved with other EXPAT friends going out to restaurants, bars, socialising, and generally not mentally being in China.

Lets say this is Type A expats.

The other foreigners are the ones who go for the total Chinese immersion experience to be like Chinese.

These are Type B expats

So basically its one or the other in varying degrees when it gets down to it.

A while back I stated I liked Shanghai much better back in the early 90's. Then it was the pioneering spirit of achieving something not like today pretending to be something it isn't. Expats who say they think the shanghai of today is far better than before are the Tyoe A expats.

Simple really.

By the way I have never said I hate Shanghai. I am honest with the way I think and feel, in other words, reality.

Nah I have to admit. I am also a bit here for the cultures. Found 3 today. One moldy patch in the bedroom, one in a corner at the window in the living, and a cup of yoghurt from last month in the fridge.
