Winter's over-who's getting back into regular exercise??

Postby ATP » Mon Feb 13, 2012 6:44 pm

It is certainly hard to maintain the commitment throughout the cold, cold winter months. But the weather is improving.

Which members have resumed their regular exercise regime? Any stop? Who continued? If continued, how do you manage with the cold, & convince yourself to continue?

Never stopped. Winter is climbing season in some places so I've just come back from a week's ice climbing. Just need to keep it going now so I'm ready for the summer alpine season. The key to me is having something to train for, otherwise there is no way I would be getting up at 6 in the morning to go to the gym.

No gym necessary, just run the parks and use some home made free weights
from things at home, ie; fill a 3.8 liter bottle with water and use it like a weight..

I am not a runner but I am given to understand that the biggest problem with running out of doors in this town is the fact that air quality is generally at its lowest (because particulate levels are, as a rule, at their highest) right at the times when most people would fit their daily runs in to their schedule - early morning and mid evening.

Never stopped, runnig outside is fine, also hit the gyms. Walking outside on a cold day also burns mega calories. Honestly except for a few days, it is not that cold here

Winter is not over until April, but is great that you have such a wishful thinking :D .

I never stopped with my routine except for Chinese New Year week as everything was closed and trainers where on vacation.
I consider going to the gym in the same category as to go to work, that is the only way to stay motivated specially now in winter with such a nasty weather.

Is the air quality in SH that bad? I know that it is not the best, but is there any big difference with big cities such as NYC or London?

Well you know, it is tough to get straight, reliable, consistent data on air quality in Shanghai, or any China city, for some reason. Hmm, not sure why that could be. But the short answer is, yes. Yes it is well worse than either of those cities. This time of year (Nov-March) is especially bad; the storms that start to come in spring through summer help a bit. But it's still pretty bad.

On the plus side, it's better than Beijing!

As I say, I'm not a runner, and I'm not trying to tell anyone else they shouldn't. All I'm saying is, when you run, you aspirate the smaller and more damaging particulates in the air deeper into your lungs, and these particulate levels are highest at the times when runners most commonly hit the trail. Of the million and one things that are slowly killing us all in this town, I know this is but one, so everyone has to run their own risk assessment. Is it "OK" or "fine" to run outside? Depends on each individual's definition of fine and OK.

I'm a runner and an environmentalist but I am not involved in air quality. However my colleague is a specialist. The air quality in Shanghai is much better than Beijing but significantly worse than London / NYC. The worst part in Shanghai is the large amount of smaller particulates that get deep into the lungs. These are the ones that cause respiratory problems.

If I run outside then I will do it in early morning before the build up of traffic. I love those few days in a year when I am outside of China and can run in clean air.

There was a story recently about testing for the smaller particulates that are particularly dangerous because they lodge in the lungs and can get into the bloodstream. China is introducing a national standard soon but in Shanghai they have been testing for them (PM2.5s) for the past five years as part of a trial. Shanghai failed to meet the proposed standard in each of these five years (and that includes the Expo period where great efforts were made to improve air quality).)\ And if the government is admitting to that, I fear the real picture is pretty grim.

Hmmm...then perhaps it's best to undertake all forms of aerobic exercise in the safety of one's home!

Best exercise I ever started - 100 pushups / 200 squats / 200 sit ups and 50 pull-ups programmes.

Go to http://www.hundredpushups.com and the programme is there plus the links to the others (squats, pullups, sit ups etc.)

Free, do it at home, no eqpt except a pull up bar, four simple exercises for a good full body work out (I add a few wrestlers bridges for lower back.)

Doesn't sound like much huh?

After 6 weeks I was in as good shape as I have ever got in the gym doing 5x5 splits for months- swear to bog!

Most people can't even be bothered to do 20 push ups, 10 situps, 5 squats. Even if they do, they can't keep it up.. It has to become a part of your daily living. Mental and physical need to be addressed.

^^

Great thing about the 100 / 200 programmes is they are progressive but start you out on low reps (after a test to define your level) and only the last of 5 sets is to exhaustion.

Perhaps technically it is not over.

But the bitter, miserable cold/coldness has passed, and you can actually feel that there's more sunshine & warmth, most certainly since the particularly unusual light snow fall during February. This change ought to be enough.

Saw a segment on the internet last night, from a US talk show (don't remember which show). Had 5 men lined up--a couple of middle-aged doctors, some younger chaps, & one very fit bloke who might have been in his 60s--all competing to see how many push ups they could do in 1 minute. The 60+ bloke beat them all, clocked at 114 within 60 seconds. Might have been true, he was very quick.

I have read that thirty push ups within a minute is regarded as one measure of fitness for middle aged chaps. I am unable to do this. How many can you do?

I think that if anyone can do more than 15-20 push-ups it means they re quite fit. For 50+ year-olds, even 10 push-ups is good.

Love that story about the old timer beating the youngun's in a pushup contest.

Try doing 50 bodyweight good form squats. You'll KNOW you've worked.
