Witopia: Changing gateways

Postby woaishanghai07 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:59 am

I just bought Witopia last week. It was quite slow at first, but I looked around and did a few things (not quite sure what I did) and now it's super duper fast! Youtube streams perfectly and facebook works with no problems! Am uber happy!

Only thing is, I want to change my gateway to one of the UK gateways so that I can watch BBC iPlayer. I've tried following the instructions on here http://wiki.witopia.net/wiki/Changing_Gateways but I'm having difficulty. I'm using a Mac and I'm trying to find the personalVPN.conf file so that I can change the permission settings in order to allow me to change the gateway, but no matter what I try I just can't find the personalVPN.conf file.

I've opened it up through the Tunnel blick application, changed the gateway then closed it and clicked save but it won't let me save because I don't have permission to make changes to it. So then I need to access it in Finder, and no matter what I do I cannot find it. I've typed in 'personalVPN.conf' in spotlight, no result, I've tried finding it manually in my library, no result, I've tried viewing the package contents of the Tunnel Blick application, no result. I've tried looking for the 'openvpn' folder, but no result. I can't find it anywhere.

It shows up in my recent documents after I've tried messing around with it, but I can't seem to view my recent documents in Finder.

Basically I need to be able to view the 'personalVPN.conf' file in finder, right click and then select Get Info in order to change the permission settings. But I can't find it anywhere!!

Can anyone help??

When you click on the tunnel icon you should have a window that pops up that allows you to connect and disconnect. That same window I think also has an option for configuration and if you click on that it opens the file you need to edit.

to the OP: did you sign up for the PPTP package, or the VPN SSL package (in other words, the cheap one or the more expensive one)?

I signed up for the $60 one, the better one basically. And yeah, I've tried changing it through Tunnel Blick but it won't let me save it because I need to change the permission settings, and I can't change the permission settings until I've found the file in Finder. And that's my problem, actually finding the file in finder.

Woo, I just did it! Tip: When you open the file, right click the title of the file then it allows you to access the folder that it came from.

Yes you can't change the gateway (USA by default) using the PPTP product.

I had it working fine for a while. I can still download stuff but it doesn't play. Is that the same problem you have?

Find the personalVPN.conf file in spotlight using Finder or going to your user folder - Library - OpenVPN

When you see openvpn.conf do a cmd-click and choose 'get info' . Change the sharing and permissions to read and write. Then you can save the file to change gateways.

It works well, but it seems I get about 2 minutes of reasonable speed on the UK gateway before it is heavily throttled. I was using iplayer downloader to get BBC shows. You can still initiate downloads using the BBC Adobe Air app, but I prefer downloading content from UKNova as there is no geofiltering or DRM and it is easy for me to burn onto a DVD ready to play on a big screen.
