I wanted to get Witopia, but not sure is it a software or comes in a box...

It can be either. Most people buy the software version.

Stopped using Witopia about a year ago. Very erratic performance in my opinion. Loads of better options out there.

My guess is that you didn't realise there are different gateways. I use the US west coast ones and it's very fast and very stable.

LA Main most recently, with bit of editing to the config file. Speed is fine!

No!

Great answer ...

ditch witopia; i'd estimate their average speed to be about 56k on your typical average day, it was fine until about oct/nov last year, when speeds started dropping to being abysmally slow.

For the last 8 mths, the only time where i get decent speeds are btw 2am-6am in the morning. and by that i mean good enough to logon to facebook to view status updates; hardly good enough for photos and youtube is still unacceptably slow.

I can watch youtube videos with no buffering. That is acceptable to me. Which gateway do you use?

I've just started using 12vpn. Seems decent, though their Euro servers are a shitload slower than their American servers. There are 7 gateways.

It's the same with Witopia and StrongVPN. The US gateways, especially West Coast, are the fastest.

Yeah, I'm using nothing but the west coast gateways, which themselves aren't great.

I don't particularly stick with any gateways. The west coast gateways do seem slightly faster; but since all of them are too slow to be useable, at times i can't help but think the speed increase is in my head.

Ironically the hkg gateway, esp the tcp server, which were supposed to be the panacea to all witopia speed woes, is the slowest of them all.

For youtube; it's about a 2 second buffer for every 1 second of play. ie: a 30 minute dreamweaver tutorial will take 1hr30mins to finish playing. and that's on a good day. :)

If I'm not renewing my Witopia yet, is there anyway to update the client with the new gateways?

As a former witopia user, I just switched over to strongVPN.... much happier. It is more expensive but I am finding more consistent speeds, better connection for streaming video, and I can watch Hulu... I have been able to watch streaming hulu at 9 pm, normally peak time and slower speeds. I also was able to watch streaming NFL without interruption, which I was unable to do with witopia...

Funny. had the exact opposite experience. strongvpn froze up on me a lot and the country switching process and complexity was nuts . still a good company though.

witopia has more countries, instant changes.

picorat..you need to get witopia support people involved, or if you have, I'd try again. you have something going on there that is happening before you hop on their servers.
